With all these great pics being posted, I have a camera question. Is it safe/wise to bring a 35mm DSLR to Negril? I bought it because I love to take pictures (lots of pictures - some might say too many!). Since we've never stayed on the Cliffs before, I really want to bring it, and I'd love to get some great beach shots as well. On the "other" Negril forum, several of the posters raise issues with bringing expensive cameras. Any thoughts?
My 8th trip to the magic that is Negril is coming up in mid November, and I always bring my DSLR with no problem. You gotta bring your camera mon!
No worries Lenny, I usually travel with at least 3 cameras lol. My DSLR, my waterproof P&S and a smaller more compact P&S. What can I say??Originally Posted by Lenny
@gregandkelly63 - trust me, the DSLR stays strapped around my neck at all times. I can be somewhat clumsy, so I don't take any chances on dropping the camera. Typically I just bring it out when I want to take pictures; if I'm just spending the day on the beach, the waterproof camera comes with me.
I'm more concerned about attracting unwanted attention with the camera...
There are so many people here with EVERY kind of camera you can think of...so do what you would do anywhere with anything of value....keep your eye on it.
I wouldn't dare take my DSLR camera to the beach. There are 2 things that can damage a camera faster than anything. Sea water and sand. I am will not risk dropping my camera in the water or the sand. (I have never dropped my camera, but don't plan on tempting fate). My point and shoot camera is 12 megapixel and I have taken some amazing shots with it. I always have it with me in Negril!
I guess I'm okay then bringing a water proof dive camera with me?
I'm more worried about theft, a 12 megapixel camera is easy to replace, my dive camera not so much......
I think the OP is also more worried about someone "walking" off with it as opposed to the sand or water :-p
I wouldn't think of visiting Negril without a DSLR or two plus a few lenses. I bought the cameras to take pictures, not to leave at home while I vacation.
I have seen some very "professional" looking shots from a P&S............."seen some great pool shots with a bent stick"

I take the point and shoot with a waterproof case for underwater shots. Not the best, but it works.
I bet you couldn't tell the difference in my point and shoot pics from ones taken with an SLR.
2nutz4travel.......I think I understand what you're saying. Some people can get touchy with their pics being taken on the beach. lol
LOL I would be one of those people, that's why I like being behind the camera!Seriously though, I try to take most of my pictures early in the day when there aren't a lot of people around. I like to go for an early morning walk with my camera.
Thanks everyone, I'll definitely take my DSLR! Now to decide if I take the tripod or not....
