Holy Moly!!!
Wow!
I saw these going up yesterday - yah, wow!!
anything that will slow the traffic down will be greatly appreciated
Sidewalks?!?! Yah, mon!
now that's progress!
The sidewalks will be a nice alternative to almost being run over while walking along the side of the road. Knowing Jamaican drivers, you will now be able to be run over on the sidewalks!
There are two more sets of lights going up in the next week or so, and the sidewalks and median that are planned will be raised - I seriously doubt anyone would want to destroy their tires, suspension and/or vehicle to get up on the raised sidewalks or median...
The progress is moving forward and is scheduled to be done by the end of the year.
If you don't like the way I drive, then stay the heck off the sidewalk! :)
Can't wait to see it for myself.............realllllllllly soon.
This is wonderful news and I would think it will be good for businesses on the road.
while that is great news, it makes me worried that the place will be under construction for my first visit
Wow - that is great. Maybe some day sidewalks will appear up in the cliffs
That is awesome!!
Hopefully the side walks won't be used for passing lanes!
Great news!!
Amazing! We have been asking for them to do something for years and I never thought I'd see it. Now do the crossing guards lose their jobs? This would be a hardship for them.
wow:)
Can I just say this is HUGE!!!! Having had a vested interest and very proactive effort in improving traffic conditions and lessening fatalities on Norman Manley after a friend lost her son to a speeding and illegally over-taking car on NMB I am just so psyched about this. There were a lot of talks and proposals and great effort on the part of the Negril Chamber of Commerce and it seemed such an uphill battle and soon come became disheartening. But now it is happening and I couldn't be more pleased. Soon come does come! I am going to share this with friends who joined me in an effort to make change. Thanks!
Rob - do you know where the sidewalks will start and end on the beach road? Just curious.
I hope there is a huge penalty and some kind of enforcement for motorists that blow through the lights and maybe in the start patrol actively watching and ticketing. The lights are the first step but for that to be effective active enforcement is necessary. Still so pleased this happened.
This is Jude, Mrs CanadaGeorge,, . for the last fifteen years one of our favourite things to do is walk the west end road. We would just grab our mask and flippers and roam, looking for a place to swim and have a redstripe. We even walked one day from the round a bouts to Hogg's Heaven. There is always someone to meet and lots to do. Last November we had just watched the sun set at Xtabi and felt like some supper at DeBarr, a short walk out the road. Right accross Attachment 22728 from Rockhouse my foot stepped on a loose rock ( ironically just a few feet from the only sidwalk in Negril). My ankle twisted and the results are in the picture. I fell right onto the road and thankfullly there were no busses coming back from Ricks. Where the venders are accross from Rockhouse is getting absoulutely impossible to walk through. I know that I am fifteen years older now but I am not getting any younger and I would still like to enjoy going out the road. The sidewalks would be the best and safest idea .Thank you Negril, Walk Good.
I hope they let them blink yellow for a likkle while so tne drivers on the road get used to them being there ! I also want to say don`t belive that if the light is red for the car`s that all will stop, always be very careful anytime your walking any road on the island, that way you will get to enjoy all your time in paradise!
Ya mon it is truly Paradise !
Bless !
on the rock
semi(and crew):):)
This is great news!!
Goodness give it a chance before you guys say it won't work.
Wonderful!
Not sure how effective a traffic light will slow down drivers on NMB particularly since there is no cross traffic at these intersections. A few well marked speed bumps on the other hand would probably be more effective and cheaper. The transition from no traffic lights to even one in a small town probably has some symbolism...I would rather it not occur in Negril, but improved road safety conditions are needed.
WOW ....and sidewalks too!!! will make it safer for everyone hopefully!
I'm more excited about the sidewalks than the lights!
Oh yah, the next thing ya know, Rob will be posting pictures of an Ambulance....
Only kidding!
VVHT
That is it! Negril will never be the same!
I see your point. I also feel very strongly about better road safety conditions...but, the "sleeping police" marked speed bumps probably would be quite effective, maybe cheaper since no power required and less likely to be effected by high winds or hurricanes. However, this is only a thought and not meant to "rain on any parade". Anything that saves a life is worth it! Sidewalks would be great too! The best part of it...is that SOMETHING IS BEING DONE...and that is a great start.
I couldn't agree more with what you posted Yetta....as wha gwan....
Thanks Suzengrace! I almost didn't post it, fearing that some would take it the wrong way. Life is precious and can be taken away so very quickly. I truly appreciate your comment. Respect mi lady..
I hear you Yetta...But after so many years -its excellent to see something being done in a positive note...I just hope they one day they put a few speed bumps on the west end road-sidewalks arent as easily placed in many areas along that road-and as more of a convenience to pedestrians than stopping the speeders..but speed bumps-that should slow down many of the speeders-we can only hope..but again -great news for manley blvd/beach road..
For more details about all the improvements on the way, here are two articles from December outlining the plans that are already underway - one from the Mirror and one from the Observer.

As stated, the issue has been in development for years. As with any major roadway infrastructure changes, there had to be the proper studies, measures and various solutions discussed before implementing any such changes. Improperly implemented changes can lead to other unexpected issues and problems that would then need to be dealt with.
Traffic control measures such as the traffic lights and medians that are in the works are much preferable to the speed bumps and humps being discussed here by some. As any city planner or road planning website will mention, putting speed bumps or humps on any major thoroughfare (which the beach road is) is not only impractical but also extremely dangerous. While Norman Manley Blvd is a major artery for western Jamaica, it is also used as an emergency route for the surrounding areas and to place such measures as speed bumps on the road is dangerous for emergency vehicles and should never be used. All knowledgeable city planners and road developers know this simple fact. To do so can cost lives instead of saving them.
Lisa and I have been noticing the placement of traffic pattern monitors to measure the flow, speed, number of vehices, etc. placed on the beach road for quite some time and now we are seeing the fruits of the labour that has already been done. There are three sets of lights installed on the beach road to be used as traffic control measures as well as pedestrian crossings. Sidewalks and medians are coming next and should be completed by the end of this year. And as for pedestrians, there is still need to use the common sense practice of "stop, look and listen" and "look both ways" before you cross the street that we all learned as children.
As mentioned in the articles, as soon as the work on the beach road is finished, the concentration will focus on the West End Road known as One Love Drive. Similar solutions including the sidewalks are being planned for there as well.
And VVHT, I already posted a picture of our latest ambulance at the fire station back in August of last year... (grin)
