What ways do you save money for Jamaica
i save money many different ways to go to Jamaica. i buy #s weekly on ballgames (gambling). i save all my change. I have a vacation account that a certain amount of money gets deposited each paycheck and several smaller things i do. i was wondering what every one else does to save money for the trip down to Jamaica. i may be missing some $$$ somewhere. please share your ideas.

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
I started a "vacation fund" account that is funded by the money I am saving from quitting smoking. Jamaica is my motivation to stay away from the cigs. I guess the new smoking ban won't mean as much to me now...lol

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
If the wife and I would quit smoking it would pay for a trip, if we would cut out cable/internet/telephone that would be nearly two additional trips. Bus alas I just continue to work, waste money as above, and spend our retirement early by spending several wonderful weeks through out the year (each year) visiting my #1 favorite place on the planet. Any week is a great week in Jamaica, but the best are in the west! You can quote me.

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
come on peeps, lets use our imagination. i also am clearing out things on craigs list

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
i work for commission, during the busy times i work my butt off. one year i saved all my change, loonies, twonies/ quarters, ended up with $900

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
I have a vacation fund...It doesnt cost me alot. My entire trip budget is always $1300, including airfare.
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
I save by booking through Onestop and use the "special sale" at CoCo just "before the rates jump and you pay double next week for what I just paid the week prior? HIYOOOOO
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
We got rid of cell phones and we put money away each week. Not glamorous but it works.
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
Save all the loose change and recycle bottles and cans.
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
if you are going for a week or three, just figure out the cost, divide by the number of months and make an effort to put away the money necessary each month.
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
we don't go out to dinner and we don't exchange gifts at Christmas - our vacation is our gift!
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
I take some 1 and 5 dollar bills out of my wallet every day and put them in my "Jamaica wallet".
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
Get up, do my job, collect money. Repeat ad nauseum until the next trip.
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
The way I save is by not returning as often ....
-
Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
We have a free checking account that is separate from all other accounts. This is our vacation fund.
We stopped going out to dinner (big bucks) and go to lunch or out for pizza instead
We do not buy birthday, anniversary or Christmas presents for each other
Save all change and deposit in vacation account
Luckily we both hate to shop so we don't spend a lot of money on "stuff"
We pay credit cards in full when due but use the ones that give us cash back. This cash goes in the fund.
Dividend checks, tax refunds, etc go in the account
Recently lessened our cable service to save $$$$
Changed Car & Property Insurance Company to save $$$$
Thinking about getting rid of the land line phone and just having cell phones. Not sure about this one. What do you all think about that?

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
Flights- we use our US Air miles card whenever possible, racking up the miles!
Hotel/ other expenses- I direct deposit $250 a month into our vacation account; if I dont see the $, seems I dont miss it as much. And the good old change jar does help...
Give them both 5-6 months to accumulate... and... we're off!

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
I have a part-time job where I work a few hours a week. On payday I go to the bank and withdraw in twoonies and add to our Irie Fund. Any change left over goes in as well.
We live very inexpensively, we hardly go out to eat and do not buy gifts for each other for any occassions. Our gifts to each other is the ability to go to Negril a couple of times a year :)
Next on the list is to quit smoking! We both smoke and spend an average of $400 a month on cigarettes! Quitting alone would fund our trips.

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
For those who have WellsFargo. They have an account called "Way to Save" Everytime you use your Check or Debit card - it takes a dollar out of your checking account and puts it into your "Way to Save" account.
My Way to Save is my Fun Fund. I put some money from each paycheck into it as well too.

I vote for getting rid of the land line. It took me a long time to wrap my head around it because I had a land line for YEARS.
Now that I don't have it, I don't miss it AND my cell phone bill is MUCH CHEAPER than my land line was.
GO FOR IT!

I agree! When I retired, I started looking closely at our monthly bills. Amazing just how much we were spending on a land line! As we say in the medical field, duplication of services for sure. S--- canned the land line and haven't missed it at all! For myself, just got a tracfone which meets my needs nicely. Luckily, good cell reception around our area is good.
Like a few boardies said..cook at home...no gifts for us on B'day's, etc...(of course we still get our kids and grandchildren gifts)...if any tax refund, it goes in the vacation fund too! Truly does add up quickly. And last but not least...if the rates to fly are too high or more than we would like, JUST STAY LONGER!!! :)

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
biggbxguy, I've always wanted to learn how to sell on ebay, and started to read on the site. Have a few things I could part with (antiques circa 1865) Problem: no spare time!

Re: What ways do you save money for Jamaica
Now that I am retired and living on a fixed budget, I have pared down all my expenses and offset some of them with p/t work so that it costs me about the same to live here in So. Fla. as it does in Jamaica (@$700 US per month).
Now I just have to save for the plane fare and the cost to ship a pallet and clear it with Jamaican Customs and I am ready to go.
Peace and Guidance

Wow. Does that 700 Include your rent in South Florida? When I was in school down there, the only rates like that were in Liberty City.

I mentioned I work "P/T" and that is here in So. Florida. It offsets about $700/ mo in rent/utilities each month. It actually costs me less than $700/mo to live in Jamaica but I choose to spend a likkle more each month to upgrade my living conditions there as the house is still under some construction.
All in all, I would say it costs me about $700 each place when everything is deducted from my SocSec check.
And, no, I don't live "like I were in Liberty City" as I live near the Intracoastal on Florida's Gold Coast.

When the one dollar coin was introduced in Canada it had a picture of a Loon (bird) on one side hence the slang term loonie. When the two dollar coin was introduced the term twoonie was a natural fit.
