    Chick V

Found this on Gleaner, it's about ebola but found the opening paragraphs about Chick V disturbing.
Purposely fudging the number of chick v cases just to avoid a travel ban is absurd.
Sorry jamaica but with the unsolved violence and lying about chick v numbers in a time with ebola lurking on the planet we have canceled our trip.

    Tubes,

The copyrighted commentary you posted from the Gleaner has been replaced to the link of the actual copyrighted article. The comments made do not necessarily reflect the views of The Gleaner as it is just a commentary and not an actual news story.

We have friends in Kingston who were actually diagnosed with chick-v - and other than missing a few days of work, their 3 day illness felt like a bad flu. Many illnesses are being confused with chick-v, adding to the perception that the numbers are being under estimated. Since it has flu-llike symptoms, some people who have it dont report it, and others who dont have it but have a case of the flu are spending time, money and medical resources for negative results. I dont feel it is possible that the actual number cases can be ever truly known.

But seeing as chick-v is not fatal, it can be treated just as you would treat a normal flu.

And "if" Ebola hits Jamaica, let's hope it doesnt come from the USA, which already has been hit by Ebola, which is a deadly disease. And let us all hope that four people wont have to be quarantined here because the USA Ebola patient was allowed to enter the USA infected and then misdiagnosed with the flu.

This is a scary situation around the world and the airport personnel at Sangster are on high alert.

I agree Rob,but jamaica has had two years to prepare for chick v and not only failed but also deceived for fear of travel ban. I would hate to see the outcome of ebola on the island wether it came from the US or directly from Africa, yes there are direct flights from the effected area to Kingston. It is scary that ebola has arrived in the US thru an airport. With all the infrared cameras that are in immigration , sensing body temps for fever, it still got here. The incubation period of ebola is gonna be the big problem for the spread of this virus.
I wonder if a passenger leaving jamaica with chick v would be able to travel home without any problems, being that ebola starts with flu like symptoms just like chick v.

Tubes - you are aware that chick-v infected the USA before Jamaica, correct?

The USA had years to prepare and failed before Jamaica did.

The commentary you read is just that, a commentary. That would be the author's opinion, their comments, not a fact. The Gleaner did not include it in their news section because it was not news, but just someone's comments in their Commentary section. There is a difference for a reason, legal reasons.

    Rob,
You can believe the reporting that the US had it before jamaica , but with the cover up by Jamaican officials on when it started and the number of confirmed cases, I find it hard to believe. In July jamaica reported 30 cases but now has an epidemic only confirms the fact that jamaica has it's head up its ass dealing with this.

True, chick V is flu like with symptoms lasting an average 3 days,it can also last from 1 to 21 days. It is not fatal but deaths have occurred in the young, weak and old. Most people who catch it will be ill for a few days and then be fine, while others will have side effects for years with aching joints, arthritis and more.
This is not just a Jamaican problem it is a warm region virus.

    Re: Chick V

I believe that the USA had a reported case before Jamaica, because that was reported in the news. Just as on Sunday Sept. 28th, the Jamaica Health Minister held a press conference and said:

"Jamaica's health minister said Sunday that the government is doing all it can to combat a newly arrived mosquito-borne virus that is increasingly disrupting life and cutting productivity on the Caribbean island.

In a national address carried on television and radio, Fenton Ferguson said the chikungunya virus is spreading across Jamaica and "everyone is susceptible."

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/...maica-25827289

Holding a nationally televised and radio carried news conference being covered by the international news media including ABC News is a very strange way to "cover up" something.

The Doctor in the article you posted would have been the one giving the press conference had his political party won the last election. You have to take his comments with that perspective.

The first thread you posted was someone's opinion. The second was made by the opposition to the present government party in power. There has been an internationally covered and reported press conference.

We even had a link posted here on Oct 1st in another thread about this topic explaining St.Thomas parish seems to be having the most cases:

    http://negril.com/forum/showthread.p...mas#post145276

This topic has been brought up here multiple times as far back as May and August.

    http://negril.com/forum/showthread.p...this-news-link

    http://negril.com/forum/showthread.p...mas#post145276

Even the ABC news story gives the real reasons for the under reporting:

"Confirmed cases in Jamaica are few so far, but there are many signs that the real number of sickened people is far higher than the official tally. Laboratories have only been able to confirm a small portion of people who fall ill because many patients don't bother seeking care so their cases go unrecorded. Some private doctors are also not reporting patients to the government, according to the health ministry."

With all the above exposure and explanations coming from news sources as well as directly from the health ministry, how could there possibly be a cover up?

Does it matter who had it first? I don't think so, it just seems that it is spreading faster there than here. Maybe our govt is covering it up....who knows. After all Obama said there was no way ebola was getting on a plane and coming here, it did and is. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers or get in a pissing contest. All govts lie to protect sanity , economies and themselves.
