Good morning everyone ☺. My nephew plans to be in Negril next February during his University break along with his girlfriend and best friend . Nice kids and on a budget. Where would you recommend? Would an AI like Riu be a good idea as its their first time to Jamaica without their families. All opinions welcomed. Thanks!

IMHO Riu may be too far from 7 mile beach. They will be spending a lot of money on cabs and it may be more upscale than spring breakers really need. Check out Merrils 3. It's AI, cheap, basic, just a little south of mid-beach. They have no pool but you can use the one next door at Merrils 2 and you can eat and I think drink there as well. We were there with a large group for a wedding and it worked out just fine. I think Fun Holiday may also have an AI option. Maybe someone else can address that.

The Grand Pineapple is in the middle of 7 Mile beach and is very budget friendly.

You are going to get a lot of split opinions, but I feel like an AI in Negril would be to miss out on a huge part of what makes Negril so great: Walking the beach and stoping (often) for great food/drink at interesting spots. I guess it depends on their nature, but I know as a college student I would not have wanted to be anchored in one spot. Places like Travellers, White Sands, Negril Palms are affordable and non AI

I totally agree. When I was a young college student, I wanted to experience the culture when I traveled. Ratty2141, I was wondering, was the AI an option you wanted or one they wanted?

Their parents felt a bit more comfortable with the AI option as they are 19 and this is their first trip without them. Appreciate all these suggestions everyone!

To each their own but I'm so grateful that I didn't have helicopter parents.

I think that's a bit harsh, Mikey. A 19 year old travelling on their own for the first time can get in a lot of trouble. As as a parent I can totally understand their feelings. As a former teenager, I'd want to be free!

I was once a 19 year old traveling on my own for the first time and it was to Vietnam! Since when does being over 18 years old not qualify as an adult. This all depends on how you raised your children in my opinion.

They can get into PLENTY of trouble when the penitentiary gates of the AI are opened and those looking for "freedom" can do it anyways. I say let them decide.

You got to show your children that you trust them to do the right thing sometime.

    Just my opinion.
