    Re: First time visit

Last year, because of the Olympics, the celebration was set for the last week of July. This year it will be held in Negril from July 27 to August 2.

It was hot, so I took more taxis than I usually do in April, so perhaps budget a little more for transportation, even if you don't think you'll need it. Also, I really wish I had brought an umbrella for those summer, mid-afternoon downpours- something I had never bothered to bring for April trips. Because there are less tourists in town in the summer, I noticed an increase in the frequency and enthusiasm of those selling items in their shops and kiosks, and by those walking the beach. I really enjoy the One Love Bus tour, even if you aren't a big drinker, it's a nice way to tour the west end. I love the live music around the beach at night, and several afternoons. I am sure to take a taxi any time after sun set, which, even in the summer, is between 6:30-7 pm.

    Enjoy your first visit!

Thanks so much, I'll make sure to bring an umbrella. Are taxis expensive there? I've been doing some research on the One Love Bus tour, I'm going to check it out.

Have any of you guys done jet skiing there or zip lining? I was interested in trying something I've never done before?

I like to use the route taxi during the day, the routes are between $150-210 j depending on which route you are on. You can charter a taxi by determining a price before you get in. I do this at night, but you can also find drivers during the day. I ask how much to get from there to where I'm going. If I like it I say ok, if not, ask someone else, there are usually a bunch of drivers hanging out at the usual spots. Make sure your driver is properly licensed (red licence plate, taxi decals, etc- bnewb posted a picture a few weeks back, I think). I pay about double what I pay the routes - so about $300-400 j, but I don't use the chartered taxis as much so other people can chime in!

I like the one love bus. I budget about $5 us a drink for however many drinks I think I want to buy and I budget a tip for Lenbert, although the tour is technically free so tipping is at your discretion. You will stop at about 6-7 bars along the west end. The tour lasts from about 2:30-6:30/7.

You won't find jet skis in Negril at this time.

You might like the JamWest adventure park. There was just a thread about some races they are hosting, but they do have other attractions you might enjoy. https://www.jamwest.com/

You can do some basic zip lining at YS Falls or Jam West Speedway. Nothing too elaborate, but good enough for a introduction if you've never done it before. I once did a full zip line course up near Ocho Rios, but that is a few hours away from Negril.

You won't find any jet skis in or around Negril (to the relief of many Negril Boardies ). Instead, hire a glass bottom boat to take you snorkeling on the reef or in the caves of the West End.

ETA: Livin beat me to it, with basically the same info! I took too long to click "Post".

Ok, so it's not too expensive then. It will be a total of 5 of us so we should be able to split the fares. Also, I'm guessing some people drive without the proper licensing so I'll be sure to look out for that.

The one love bus sounds like it's a lot of fun & budget friendly. I didn't know it was that long, i figured 2 hours or so because of it practically being free.

Thank you for the information. I can do without jet skiing but I will have to try out zip lining while there. Also, do you know about how much it is for a glass bottom boat, I'm trying to budget everything in?

I've never actually gone out on a glass bottom boat, but I've been offered for $25 us. I'm sure with a group of 5 you might be able to get it down a little bit. I try not to haggle too much, as with the taxis, if you ask how much and don't like it, walk down the beach about 10 yards to the next guy with a boat. You can ask to go out to Booby Cay (be sure to wear or bring sandals or water shoes), or organize a sunset cruise over to Rick's Cafe. There are also some larger catamaran boats that go out from a couple of places. Those cost more but some include drinks and light snacks.

Another place you might like to visit is Half Moon Beach. You can arrange a taxi to take you and pick you up. It's up the road about 20 minutes or so. It's a private owned property with a beautiful, natural beach front complete with food and beverage to purchase, sometimes live music, and their very own pirate island (with flushing toilets!). I've heard various reports of the actual cost. When I went, it was $5 to use the beach and $5 for the boat ride to the island. Some report that it only cost $5 for the boat ride, and no charge for the beach entry. They have great snorkeling and I've heard various reports about whether there is snorkel gear for rent or not. I'd bring my own if you are truly interested in that particular activity.
