The prices have come way down. If the property is in peak condition -- and that can be a big IF -- the place is as good as anywhere. Sometimes the pool is green, sometimes it's clear. Generally, it's a four-star all the way compared to most beach resorts.
The regular rooms are small and cramped but the Oceanfront are great. The owner and staff are great. I can't remember if we were in the Kasbah or India building but the balcony was wonderful and we had doors that opened into the room and this was the view from the bed
I love the view and surroundings.
I've seen the rooms; but many years ago and they all have a nice sit out area. The yard is spacious.
Here's a plus; the restaurant has very good food.
It's sunset dinner is as nice as many places.
I've stayed there and had no problems. When not staying there its a daily stop on the scooter for a drink, sometimes eat and a swim.... They love business and welcome people who come to enjoy the view and the sea... The place usually seems very quiet, even during peak season, lots of room, beautiful views, great place to swim, eat and drink.... Rooms are like many in Negril, rustic...... But a good bargin for such a great view and place to hang out...
We stayed there this past June. It's a budget hotel, for sure, but it has some nice amenities. The property is big with a nice cliff setup. Everybody loves the lighthouse diving platform. Ok restaurant with basic breakfast included. All rooms have ac, fridge and TV. Most rooms have an incredible ocean view. The staff is very friendly and a manager lives in an apartment on site. Good security at night and a big dog at the gates. There is a free shuttle to the beach that drops you off at Boardwalk Village. We had them drop us of at Wild Parrot, when we got tired of the vibe at BV. The shuttle will also take you to the Jungle and stay with you for the night.
Now for the negatives: the property can definitely use some maintenance. The gardens looked uncared for. Some of the cottages were weather-beaten with dumpy furniture on the porch. The ac wouldn't work when they diverted the power to the DJ on karaoke night. The shower head was clogged, as it if hadn't been checked in months. During heavy rains the roof leaked. The stove in our room didn't work. As Gerry G said, sometimes the pool is green, sometimes it is clear. However, they did recently re-open the hot tub (with cool water). Very limited menu (maybe because of slow season) for all meals. Dinner was basically the same as lunch - a few sandwiches and fish and chips. If we wanted ackee and salt fish for breakfast, I had to go to The Little Sandwhich Hut across the street, or Sharks.
My biggest gripe is that we had reserved a second floor room in the Kashbah building, through Negril Onestop. When we arrived, we were shown to a first floor room in the India building. It turned out that the Kashbah building was completely gutted. Not sure what was going on, but looked like there was some severe damage there. We were not satisfied with the India room, so we spoke to management and they upgraded us to a kitchenette room the next day (I think it was Back to Africa).
Basically, you get what you pay for. If you can deal with some of the negatives, it's a great value for cliffside lodging. We walked next door to check out the Mirage, and the property maintenance was like night and day. The rooms at the Mirage were immaculate and the grounds well cared for. Now, I heard that Escape was closed during the fall, so hopefully they took care of some deferred maintenance. However, if the rates are still low, I would expect more of the same.
