    How do they do it?

    Minimum wage goes up tomorrow
The minimum wage will be increased from J$5,000 to J$5,600 for a 40-hour workweek. The minimum wage paid to industrial security guards will also be increased from J$7,320.40 to J$8,198.80

If your making minimum wage in Jamaica, with the cost of food and electricity alone?

I guess that's why we should always remember to tip!

I agree PGW...a couple extra bucks given out wherever I eat/drink in Negril means way more to the workers than to me at this point in my life! Anyone that worked in the service industry when they were young and struggling understands exactly what that means, even more so in a struggling economy!!

$56 for a 40 hour work week! Ugh, I am so glad I tip out the staff even though I pay towards a tip pool in our rental pricing. Any extra bit is sure to come in handy.

So roughly $11US per day. But add into the mix....Negril has a very small employee base. The vast majority of workers are from Orange Bay, Green island, Lucea, Sav, Petersfield, and even further. A lot of these workers have to take route taxi's to work, so $11/ day is now $8-$7-$6-or even $5 per day. You are right, how do they do it!!! So $1US here, a little som'n som'n there goes a long way.

I believe most resort workers work six days a week, so more than 40 hours. My first career was as a server (17 years), so I understand the importance of providing outstanding service and my tips reflected that. Nowadays, I tip generously for service, not just because someone has their hand out. Average service will get 15%, and outstanding service will get more!
