    Wi Fi modem

We purchased a wi Fi modem from Digicell last year and was very happy with it. My question is how do we go about getting it hooked back up. Can we purchase enternet time from digicell online before we go or will we have to go to the shop when we get there. We arive on a Saturday and probably won't make it to negril before it closes. Anybody have Experiance with re-starting one of these modems? Thanks

If you have the same one I have, you can buy credit anywhere in Negril/JA & add it. Of course, you'll have to have wifi access somewhere to add the credit. There is a way to do it online but I did that w/ help when I had the USB modem. I have the black box one now & had to figure out how to add credit myself. Probably easier to do it at the store but eventually doing it yourself is probably a good idea. If I could figure it out, it should be a breeze for others. LOL

My wife e-mailed them and they told us we needed to re register it. It's been almost a year since we used it. Was really hoping to use it when we got there for my wife's Face Book addiction LoL. I guess we will just have to wait tell Monday to take care of that and the phones.

You can fund (top up) your SIM at http://www.digiceljamaica.com/

Once the SIM is reactivated and you have credit you'll need to put it into a phone.

Then dial *143*400# and you'll be able to pick a data plan. Best deal is 500MB for 48 hrs @ 100JA + GCT. It will automatically renew every 48 hrs as long as you have credit.

Then take the SIM out of the phone and put it in the modem and you're good to go.

It's a PITA that you can't do this on the web without having a handset but that's how it was 2 weeks ago.

You can cancel the auto renew but once again you need a hand set.

I'm looking into some dialer programs to avoid the handset thing

What I did was NOT that complicated & had nothing to do w/ using a phone to top up. I bought time based on how long I'd be using the modem. That's how it was set up online. Looks like maybe I'll have to go to Digicel, too, if I can't get mine to work the way it did in the summer. Getting it to work effortlessly would be waaaaay too easy. I won't go into the modem (old & new) stories from last summer. Too frustrating.

The only problem with not getting a data plan is the cost.

Data on your phone sim is 40JA per megabyte. Doesn't take long to blow thru 1000JA.

Data with the 48 hour plan is 500 MB for 100

    Re: Wi Fi modem

Captaind you have me so confused. I'm an old pro on the phone thing & have known the secrets to keeping my phone active & my same number between trips for 14 years. Have posted those tips here many times over the years.

I don't need a data plan for my phone so don't know what that is about. I set up the international plan as soon as I get there. The modem thing for my netbook has been nothing short of a hassle & long days of frustration due to misinformation from Digicel employees, last summer anyway. USB modem finished after a year & no more available. Black box modem is my latest attempt to have wifi in my room instead of having to go to the lobby every day. Because I was last there in July I may have a registration issue although I was assured I would not. That was the problem w/ the USB modem... could not re-register it a year after no use. The bizarre part it was not from that date of LAST use - in which case I would have been OK - but from the date it was registered. Yep... makes a lot of sense - NOT! Think I'll just use the local wifi & head to Digicel Monday a.m. if what I did last summer doesn't work. The information here is nothing like what I've done any time in the past so I'm quite confused... not unusual when it comes to anything electronic or technology related, LOL.

    Marco,

I want just the opposite I want to be at the yard every day. Except my yard is in the hills.

However, with the latest setup I got 6 Mbps from Zion Hill. Now I'm adding an antenna and amplifier.

Hope to meet you next month
