Carpe Diem
I've never traveled to Jamaica anyway other than "solo" except after my son was born & then I traveled with him....always stayed in Negril, in the same place ( except the first time I stayed in Redground in 1983).....I now own property in Ja. & have lived here for 6 years. Go solo....stay in Negril, not Mobay & enjoy yourself!
Manda, you are in safe and excellent hands with Bnewb and Rob! I would trust them with my kids; actually - they're probably safer with Bnewb & Rob than with me!!!
Use common sense you would use at home and you'll be fine. Check out the board for any roll calls or boardies going down and you'll do great. I totally agree with the advice to give Mobay a miss alone - you can go with your friend before you leave if you want to. Every boardie has a great connection with at least 1 driver. I am sure the staff at where you're staying will give you good advice. My best advice? Find out when and where the webcasts are and head for wherever Bnewb and Rob are - guaranteed a good time at the right price in a safe environment. We have had so many good times in Jamaica, I can't even list them on an endless board .... but the best times, best food and best advice are usually from Rob and Bnewb (listen to mother Maggie - If they say don't go there - DON'T FREAKIN GO THERE!!!!! If they say go - be confident you'll be fine! Look forward to your stories of solo in Negril! P.S. Canoe has THE best onion rings - although I need to go back and retest that theory since the Seastar recently came out with some awesome ones!
Don't change a thing...I have been travelling solo to Negril for years, though I now have friends and "family" there. I agree with the others, set up a driver so when you arrive in MoBay, you will be set. Your initial exit from the airport is the only thing that you may find a little intimidating...I know I did. Its a little culture shock mixed in with lots of men trying to get your attention (for lots of different reasons....) Don't get me wrong, not scary, just a really busy area.
Once you are in the car and heading down the road, relax, enjoy the ride, stop for a cocktail and enjoy the views!
A couple of days alone will give you a great opportunity to unwind. I really don't think you will feel lonely, I never have. CoCo is a nice spot, lounge and sunbath during the day, and enjoy their bar/restaurant in the evening (if you don't want to venture too far).
I am heading to Negril on my own in 3 weeks, looking forward to every minute of my "me" time!
Oh yeah...I just read through all the posts.....you WILL DEFINATELY be approached by lots of men!! That is a given. You are a grown up, and I am not telling you what to do.....but from LOTS of experience, I have to say that I now keep the conversations "short and sweet". Since it is obvious that you are not looking for a companion in any way, be sure that they know that right from the get go. I love chatting with people, but I have found that this has lead to some men thinking I want more than I actually do...lolol
Glad you were able to change flights and hotels to accomodate yournew dates. Enjoy your time in Negril!
We all agree. There is NO reason to change anything. Being alone for 2 days in Negril.......no problem! Don't waste your time in Montego Bay---get to Negril. I have gone alone many times...nothing to fear. You will be in a calming setting. Very nice of Lisa/Bnewbie to give you her tel #. Jamaica is a very welcoming country...you will see for yourself.

Manda - I know that you two will have a great time in Jamaica (and give Andre a big hug for going to help out in Haiti). He sounds like a keeper! Negril if the perfect place for some R&R and great memories.
I agree you should continue with your plans..you will love Jamaica and can plan to come back to see your friend again soon.
