American Airlines lost my checked suitcase. It was never recovered. They offered NO compensation. Not even money to buy a new suitcase.

I believe luggage on an air carriers are covered the same as air cargo, something like $0.09/per pound based on international treaties, best to have separate insurance if carrying valuables

Maybe I have just lucked out with USAir. About 2 years ago, a simple bottle of a nice perfume was taken out of my luggage. Believe it or not, I was reimbursed with a credit for the next flight.

In Jan of this year, USAir again....my luggage was in fine shape upon arrival in Charlotte, NC...cleared customs and re-checked it in good condition. Upon arrival to my hometown, my bag did not arrive. 2 days later, they delivered it to my home. It was totally destructed on one end. All items inside were fine. I did have travel insurance but they only covered if the luggage was lost. I filed a claim with USAir and had to drive the damaged luggage back to the airport. They called me in 3 days and offered to replace the entire piece of luggage. I got to choose the color and this time opted for a hard-side piece. In less the 1 week, I was the proud owner of a new Samsonite piece that was the exact size of the one destroyed.

I can't say anything bad on USAir right now!!

    Kahuna3...so very sorry!!!!

Not likely. Like you, they're focused on getting off the plane. More likely it was the crew that comes in to clean/prep the plane for the next flight.

That's what happened to me. My seat was in zone...what Z?!?! Anyway I was one of the last to board. Me and about 6 others were forced to check our carry ons. Only consolation is the power cord (universal) was in a different bag. I really thought since I didn't have a choice in checking the bag, they would work with me.

Kahuna3 so sorry this happened to you! It seems airlines these days have very little if any responsibility to its customers. I don't check anything I feel can't be replaced. Again I'm sorry this happened.

I was thinking that the stewardesses walk the plane before the cleaning crew comes on. But what you said makes more sense.
