We typically rent a wifi hotspot when out of the country to avoid international charges on our iphones and to use my ipad. Is there something similiar in Negril? Thanks!

Many places have WiFi. I know that on the beach Alfred's is one. Just order something at the bar or restaurant ( good food too) and ask for their password.

Thanks, but not what I am looking for...most places we visit, rent a hot spot for like $10 a day. Small device the size of a credit card that you charge and provides wifi, wherever you are. On the beach, in the taxi, anywhere. Good to have to receive a text from home, facebook or use the internet for the name of the bar you want to visit!
With the popularity of inexpensive Android phones that have built in wifi hotspot capabilities, there is not much of a need or demand for a hotspot rental, thus there is no supply.
If you want to use it on a regular basis - check out the Digicel Jamaica and Time For Lime websites for what phones they have available. There are phones around us$100, and internet time can be bought for as little as 50 cents a day depending on how much data usage you need. No contracts required, just a pay as you go system. If you are here for 10 days or more, the cost is less than renting... if not, it will be slightly more than $10 a day - more in the $13 to $15 - and now you own a new phone as well.

Yes, we are aware of that option, but unlike this, the wifi that I am talking about typically supports 5-10 devices. So, we all have our own phones and ipads etc with one cost. Thanks again. Maybe not available in Jamaica.
This is what I am talking about, but it is ordered online and delivered to my home in US. Most places have an island pickup location, though.

this may work Barb - my friend has one at her house and loves it - you can buy internet minutes just like you buy credit for your digicel phone

Thanks, Seveen. But the whole point is for us to use our current phones and devices. We don't have digicel, coming from the US and I could do that with my current AT&T plan, but it is very expensive. These devices are unlimited data for all devices you want to connect to it through wifi. I can definitely order the one online, but is a hassle because you have to make sure you get it on time and ship it back immediately upon arrival back home. We much prefer the ones you can pick up and drop off at the destination airports. Some companies have even delivered them free of charge to our hotels. They are very useful, because you get to use all your own devices, unlimited data and you can connect everything up at the same time. Thanks again, though.
WiMax
available at the Digicel (phone, internet provider in Jamaica)
Most current Android devices and iPhones have hotspot capability AND allow multiple simultaneous connections. You could always unlock your iPhone and get a digicel simcard then use that as your hotspot, but unless you are out of contract AT+T will not unlock your iPhones.
Or, you could switch your service in the USA to T-Mobile, then take those devices to JA and you'll get free unlimited text messaging within JA and back to the USA, unlimited basic internet at no charge, and calls within JA and back to the USA are .20/min. No need for a hotspot, just use your devices as you always do... not only in JA, but in more than 100 countries worldwide.
T-Mobile will even pay your termination fees at AT+T, you'll end up paying less every month for your cell phone and mobile internet service, and all the current plans include the above mentioned international usage for no additional charge.
