Take your electronic devices and fancy phones with you and the odds are that you may not leave with them; not every reach but going often you are bound to leave empty one time. Or, stay in the fort knox compounds where mostly everyone has these devices and the odds are less that it will be you losing your devices lol. If you want to read your whole trip, JA may not be the place for you, at least on the busy beach. Heck I just borrow one of the locals' I-pad to check in at home .. stolen .. dunno but dare I ask "how did you get that lol." It's like them asking us, when did you arrive, where are you staying, how long are you staying tee hee. I have a cheap phone and really want no connection to the electronic world while I am away except for checking in at home once per day. I take great dvds for the locals to watch on the tv at one bar we patronize and that keeps their attention directed at the movie and not what's going on around them for a change, although I think they can do that at the same time too lol.
Another option, keep your devices in your room .. never show them around the complex ... take it to one of the fancier places and do your thing .. pack it up, take it back to your room and hide it. I do not think a lot of these burglaries are random .. they have been watching and calculating .. if you don't give them anything to see, then why would they take the risk? Otherwise, it's just plain bad luck, wrong place at the wrong time and that can happen anywhere.
I heard that when a thief is caught and convicted in JA, it's hard time, so these people are really stricken with "hard times" and I do believe that some of these culprits are drug addicts and owe a debt .. if they don't take this risk, then they are surely prey by their own people. It must be awfully hard to wake up each day with a smile -- and smile they do :-) to face no job and sometimes no home and hungry, probably with kids to feed somewhere on the island. We are not talking about our own countries which are basically turning into welfare states .. no food banks, no financial help of any kind .. I talked to a couple of good people there and thieving does cross their mind when they are "hungry" and we line the establishments along the beach eating and drinking .. they hide away at dinner time have you noticed? Not the type of food they want to eat anyway .. that's why most stay healthy. Ok ranting along here .. I don't write often but it builds my strength and understanding for my next reach as I pack my bags full of gifts, toiletries, dishes, clothing for the needy ones. Blessed day everyone.
