You are exactly right and that was the point I was making way back in the beginning before..... well, before.
You might wake up or you might not. You might get maimed or even killed and/or you might maim or kill the intruder.
It is just (as they say) "a matter of time" before something catastrophic happens. No matter how you look at it, no scenario is a good one. I agree that one has to defend oneself if it comes to that. I just disagree with the idea that it is up to the tourist to defend his or her property at the risk of great bodily harm to anyone. After all, it is just a possession and can be replaced.
Putting pressure on the owners, police and community leaders to do something about this is (in my opinion) the right way to approach the problem. I have seen the toughest of people reduced to unrecognizable victims. It may seem important to some to show their cajones and bravado on what they would do but the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
