We always tip in person. As someone else in another thread said"with a hand shake".

I was with Lembert for the bus crawl on feb 2nd. The first couple off, were the oldest, best dressed, and staying at a far nicer resort than the rest of us. hey got off with no tip for Lembert, not even a thank you. The rest of the bus were young americans and Canadians and Lembert did well!

The hotel we stay at adds a service charge but we don't know how far it goes, so we "handshake" a tip to the housekeeper a couple times a week, the bartender, beach guys at the beginning and the end, our favorite waitresses that we have known for years (usually only eat breakfast and an occasional dinner) and then we give the manager a bulk tip to spread around the other wait staff and kitchen staff who we don't get to see....recommended by the owner. That way everybody gets a piece of the pie. Works out to an extra $15 a day.
I've found most Europeans do their tipping at the "end" of their stay...
I probably over tip in Jamaica... not just for asking tho .... if you give good service then you'll get your tip from me... And I totally agree it gets you served faster when they see you again.... lol this happened to me at RIU Palace we were like some of the only people that were tipping.... ...so we went to one of the resort restaurants and we were finished as everyone else was either half way done with or just getting their entree.... they looked jealous.... just be considerate.... soon come!!!!!
I worked in the hospitality/hotel business for a number of years - the added gratuity/service charge whatever you want to call it typically gets allocated among the entire staff, including the management. Some filters down to the front line staff, but not as much as most people think. We get good service, we tip, simple as that.
Lenbert will chase you down! I love him. It's almost an implied contract to tip him ten dollars per person.
