I used to use them up until about five or six trips ago, now I just use the atm,s the fee is $3.50, so I just take out $20,000 at a time, lol, about $200 bucks. I did all the calculations if you are from Canada its the best way, better than changing to US first them Ja, even with the service charge, you come out ahead.

There is no fee to get traveler's checks from AAA, but my credit union charges 1%, so then it's $10 for $1000 worth of TCs. Using the debit card, with a charge of $3 every time I take out $200 (which is also my limit for the day), it will cost $15 in fees to take out $1000, so only a $5 difference.

I just got back last night. I stay in the hotel behind the Shamrock and normally cash my travelers checks (and pay for our room) with John at the store. He told me the cambio will not accept them anymore so he can't cash them. I had no problem using them when I was there in January. I had to go to the bank and stand in line 20 minutes then it took at least another 20 minutes to cash them. I guess I'll be using the ATM in the future.

Checked Chase and Fifth Third. Both said its three percent fee plus using a foreign atm fee(3 bucks), plus the fee of the atm I'm using. Assuming the atm fee is also about 3 that means it would be 54 dollars to take out 1000 in four 250 transactions. Got 1000 in checks for 20....Saves a little I guess plus peace of mind = worth it to us

Is the Scotia ATM at Time Square a "real" bank ATM or a retail ATM, anyone know? I have very low fees for real bank ATMs but the retail ones can charge a lot, like $10US.

It's a ScotiaBank ATM, so yes, a real bank ATM.

We used a AAA travel card for our last two trips. It's like an ATM, but with all the perks of the old TCs. Got money out at ATM in Time Square, no problems. I also took along more cash than we usually carry, just in case. Had our real ATM cards as a back up plan. No problems at all.
