What is the difference? Keep seeing people mention one or the other. Thanks.

Essentially all red plate taxis are insured to carry paying passengers. White plates are not.

A rout taxi has a specific route and it is noted on the side of their car. There is a set amount per passenger and you can get in or out of the taxi at any point during the route.

This was designed for locals in mind, but tourists attempt to use them as well. (not choice A for tourists. especially newbie to the island tourists)

You can charter mostly any route taxi for a negotiated price to take you wherever, or hire a private driver (best choice for tourists, specifically newbie tourists). A lot are listed on this site.

Oh and this topic always inspires fascinating conversation.
