    Re: Credit card Fraud

Why are all you folks picking on Jamaica like it's the credit card fraud capital of the world. it is the Capital of Casual but not the capital of credit card fraud. Go back and read through this thread...Allentown, Denver, Canada! In the end you all make it sound like Jamaica is at fault. This stuff happens everywhere. If you use a credit card you run the risk...you all know that! Before I came to Jamaica I travelled extensively in my ministry...around the world twice at least. The only fraud I ever encountered was in the good ole USofA. I've used an NCB (Jamaican bank) credit card for a number of years here without a hitch and I've used it at the airport. Please don't beat up on Jamaica about this. --Fadder Jim

i agree not a Jamaica problem - i think some computer nerd sits down and either hacks us or comes up with the algorithm of the year for credit card numbers - the good thing is reported early it's just an annoyance - cash is gone forever

Father, this is a Jamaica forum. If it was a Canadian forum it would seem like we were picking on Canada. My only reason for bringing up this subject was to tell people that it would be wise to use cash at the MBJ airport as I had my card copied there. As you said, look through this thread, and it references many other countries where fraud exists. No one is claiming Jamaica to be a CC fraud capital. We are only concentrating on Jamaica because it is a Jamaican forum.

Lido thinks someone is going to remember what my wife looks like months from now when we return and remember that I carry cash. Riiiiiight. I feel safe. No worries.

    Re: Credit card Fraud

I've never had any CC issue's in/from Jamaica in the 22 years I've been going.
Same for me. I call my CC company and I use my card at a lot of places, large and small, in Jamaica. This last trip I used it at two hotels, several restaurants, as a deposit on a scooter rental and a couple of shops (Hi Lo, Wise Choice).

I get travel rewards when I use that card and it has no international fees and it has a great exchange rate, so it's win-win-win. Also, I do NOT feel comfortable carrying lots of cash, or trying to keep it in my room safe or whatever.

I have had my card used fraudulently in the states...worst thing was not having the card for 5 days while they sent a replacement.

I never use my debit card for anything but ATM withdrawals.

It may seem win,win ,win I'll say as a retailer we appreciate your business but who do you think pays for all those miles?

    Re: Credit card Fraud

This certainly can happen anywhere. I've been through this twice. Once after a trip to Jamaica and another after a trip to Vegas. Both times the credit card company took care of it and issued me a new card. I do try to take as much cash as possible when I travel to these places but sometimes you just have to use your card. Its why they offer protection. You see stories all the time on the Canadian news of people who are arrested for these card copying schemes. Even where I am from they caught a couple of guys from Montreal who were rigging up the ATM's in the 7-Eleven's.

You should just be careful as you can and if something happens trust that your card company will do their best to look after you.
