Don't think I would use it. Part of the fun of getting there is the journey. Also takes money out of the pockets of local hard working Jamaicans....Again, Not for me.

Wnyjim,
I think it will also put money into the pockets of local hard working Jamaicans, "Johnson said about 170 jobs will be created in the areas of accounting, legal, marketing, customer services and eventually mariners." And I am sure travelling to Negril by sea will be quite a sight. The coastline is a beautiful to see.
Negril.com - For the vacation that never ends!
I think it would be more of a novelty trip thing. Do it once to do it. I also want to fly in once to see how it looks as well.
Waiting for CaptD to share on this link.....
There are several Ferry services in Massachusetts, Boston Harbor, Airport, Boston Harbor Islands and the very popular ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. ALL ARE HEAVILY SUBSIDIZED with taxpayers dollars both Federal and State! The infrastructure cost for boats and docks are considerable! On going maintenance, training and fuel are also considerable!
Can the Jamaican Government absorb this subsidy?
I'm a. Little negative now after listening to the replies. Also a big 300 passenger cat is not as seasonally adjustable as a smaller 50 passenger. I used the fast cats in Bali and they were smaller and they could add and take off boats according to demand. But they saved a lot of time vs. road travel. Like the Airport shuttle MBJ to Negril it would be a novelty to me.
I wonder how long it takes to go from MoBay to Negril by water?
personally I love the drive, scenery & stops along the way...but that's my Jamaica. Once in awhile I use to take the small planes from Mo Bay to Negril until that became too pricey ! The drive gives me time to chat with my driver & to catch up on the local news & friends also helps me to slide into my Negril vibe...Ya mon !!
Peace & love...Irie Andy
Just got back to Florida after a six day work trip at Zion Hill.
I'll do some research and check the company out on it's US operations with USCG National Maritime Center (NMC)
Just off the top of my head I don't think a ferry to Negril make logistical or economic sense.
More later

when i heard about this I didn't think about using it as a means for transportation to get from montego bay airport to my hotel in negril. I am looking at it as another tourist attraction...something to do...another way to see Jamaica's coast line... see the island from the water vs from the road... looking at it as a day spent either in Montego Bay for those that stay in Negril and spent a day in Negril for those that visit Montego Bay.
On other boards the debate was taking money from taxi drivers...i see it as a way to increase business for taxi drivers.... most likely a person will have to get from point A (hotel, airport, restuarant beach) to point B (resturant, beach, etc. etc.) and vice versa.
As far as where it would dock..why couldn't it dock in that area behind the chinaman store that's near Burger King??

Luvs,
Dock behind Chinaman's store could be too shallow, maybe at Mary's Bay or Green Island??? Either location would need a much more substantial dock.
