Teasing aside, using discretion when you're a guest is always the smart approach.
I think to an extent that's what the O.P. was asking.
She/he was asking about scoring safely, which I think indicates discretion.
Apply the same discretion when using.
When in doubt ask.
I've asked at an upscale (outdoor) restaurant and was told no.
I was glad I asked, and glad I hadn't offended my host.
