Jamaica should "wake up" like America has finally done and start to Legalize what the people want.Remove the criminal aspect,no money for incarceration, tax it to death like they do cigarettes & alcohol & gambling.

Ya know the vices that the Politicians say are bad, bad but they would wilt away financially without those taxes.

Uruguay just legalized it. Portugal decriminalized ALL drugs Ten years ago and we don't hear of any carnage in the streets,do we?

O/K Rob,I will repeat the mantra fr the Newbies,,,Weed is illegal.

I've never seen a tourist "shaken down" by the police in jamaica in 25+ trips. I have seen locals "shaken down" by police many times. Small rum bar proprietors/food vendors on the beach, along norman manley and one love dr. "shaken down" for a drink or a bite to eat. Permits are required but not always obtained (year after year). Young husslers are often "shaken down" when caught smoking ganja openly esp around tourists. A small fine payed on the scene is easier than the hassle of going to negril jail, seeing a magistrate in sav, and then being released with a $1 US fine. Young Jamaicans "shaken down" for smoking on the roof of the jungle for the cost of the officers red stripe (saw this one several times on different trips). I've asked the "victims" about this practice they agree that it is easier to comply with the officers requests (better than a beating/ or worse). But then I've seen a big adult diver a rick's "shake down" the young pickney divers for all their tips at the end of the day. My rasta friends explained to me that the big fish always eat the little fish in jamaica.

And, I would love to know where you got your statistics, Gerry. I would have said completely the opposite...less smokers than non smokers!

Since many tourists still come down here & think that it's legal to smoke here....I'm going to be the party pooper & remind everyone that it still is very much illegal to smoke "subs" in Jamaica.
    I totally agree!

This seems to follow the way the police are handling all illegal smoking including tobacco in restricted areas. They are asking the violator to discard the smoke, and given a warning. But it is still up to the discretion of the officer to warn or take further action.
    LIKE this approach!!

Oh lord, thankful for rob and Bnewb for the reality check... Before their post everyone was up for sharing their tips for scoring.

For all those forum members looking at transport and drivers in negril, choose wisely, I wouldn't want a part time dealer driving me around. Look at who recommended who on this board for scoring and driving and cross reference.

In response to Gerry,s comment about being approached to buy weed ten times a day. That's because you and many others are smokers, so you are a ready market for those that are selling. I don't get approached once, and am there a lot, because I don't smoke weed, so no one needs to ask me. It's simple supply and demand.
The only time I have been approached was last year by a older Canadian tourist who had bought too much and was going home the next day. I politely declined.

Smoking it in public places is your risk, but common courtesy should prevail for businesses and other customers alike.

Fred Stripe- if the US have got the cannabis issue right, then you can now stay at home to smoke weed. Save on the hotel and plane ticket. It's very wrong to give the impression that negril, or Jamaica is a weed Mecca. What a disservice to the people who live there.

I have to to agree with much of what you have said, however as far as being approached 10 times a day as Gerry stated, that is completely true. Good ol supply and demand. I hit the beach solo two days ago and was approached numerous times in less than a half mile. His stats are surely off, but his ratios on his last reach we're surely similar.

Regardless, if you choose to partake use a little common sense. Be respectful of those around you as well as the proprietor. Many businesses accommodate as not to upset their customer.
