Actually this has happened more than a few times in the Tampa Bay area when people were 1.) deployed, 2.) on a long term work assignment out of town/state, 3.) living in a new home waiting for the seized home to be sold, etc. Most recent publicized case was military, just last week... home trashed but volunteers came to the family's aid & fixed the place back up to liveable.
Evicting people from capture land has happened numerous times over the years I've been going to Negril. Always plenty of notice & always plenty of uproar when eviction is done. People evicted from condos where I live occasionally trash them before they move. I've seen the results... not pretty. Usually they've been living there not paying mortgage or condo fees for a very long time. Not quite the same thing but the local version.
