not really analogous to the current situation though

a better analogy would be if you went away for over a decade and came back to find someone on your land. in the US, if the 'occupation' was continuous and notorious over that period, the squatters may well have a winning argument for title by adverse possession (the exact requirements vary by state statute).

I recognize the ease with which one can resort to the morally superior feeling that "I would never take that which does not belong to me and any who does this is wrong and less moral than I," but that ignores the complex history of land acquisition and ownership throughout the course of human civilization. there are no easy answers here.

captaind wrote "Two generations ago Michael Manley (PM) started the concept of "capture land" ...

That is true, Operation Grow (Growing and Reaping Our Wealth) was intended for the government to lease lands at a minimal rate or no fee to small farmers. This was designed to create work and develop small plots of land to provide income for individuals lacking education or market worthy skills. Regardless of political affiliations, it was a government attempting to help those who were struggling to provide for themselves and family. From this concept came squatting, but it was never intended to just allow individuals the right to just take over any land as they saw fit. Like many individuals in our world, "Give and inch and they'll take a mile"

Actually this has happened more than a few times in the Tampa Bay area when people were 1.) deployed, 2.) on a long term work assignment out of town/state, 3.) living in a new home waiting for the seized home to be sold, etc. Most recent publicized case was military, just last week... home trashed but volunteers came to the family's aid & fixed the place back up to liveable.

Evicting people from capture land has happened numerous times over the years I've been going to Negril. Always plenty of notice & always plenty of uproar when eviction is done. People evicted from condos where I live occasionally trash them before they move. I've seen the results... not pretty. Usually they've been living there not paying mortgage or condo fees for a very long time. Not quite the same thing but the local version.

I know many local jams who have no family to go to .//I dont blame them if they see a piece of un-used land that they can put up some zinc for a roof and some boards for the sides so at least they have the most basic human need"SHELTER" out of the rain, cold, heat,sun..a place to lay there head..that being said they also are all well aware that at anytime the govt or owners can come along and mash up the place..in the mean time though there doing what anyone of us would do: that is to make do with what you have to work with...thats how Jams survive....(remember-Jam has NO safety for its underprivileged people-the Govt could care less) ...as far as taking over peoples physical structures..and then refusing to leave on top of that...yeah -i can see where anyone would be upset (including myself) ..As someone posted there are diff types of squatting...but i feel the ones that were moved out of Negril were the ones I stated above...a place for some shelter...

Like its been said "walk a mile in another mans shoes".......
