Well, booger.... Something I can agree on that you said. Except by posting this, you are trying to start a "pissing match" and I have always believed you don't get into one with a skunk. BTW, I am not calling you a skunk just using a colloquialism when the term "pissing" is used.

It seems that whenever someone posts a story about Jamaican matters a whole bunch of tourists have opinions. Opinions are good to have if they are informed opinions. I would venture to guess that most of the readers of this story don't know who Michael Manley was (except for a boulevard being named for him) or of how he encouraged the capture of lands.

You can go to someplace and know all about the bars, restaurants, subs, etc. and know little or nothing about Jamaican Culture or her History.

I don't speak for anyone but myself and I don't give a rat's behind if someone thinks I am not sensitive or politically correct in how I express myself.

I enjoy reading of people's experiences in Negril and offer help if asked but, frankly, I don't care about trip reports extolling drunkenness and losing one's self control on their vacation so I don't read many of them. I prefer reports about getting out of Negril and enjoying Jamaica's rich beauty and culture.

It happens from time to time that a clique of tourists develops from first reading this board and then spending time together in Negril socially. This is a good thing and helps local businesses and other readers to enjoy vicariously a new experience they might like to experience on their next trip. The only negative thing is the pack mentality that develops here that fires on all cylinders wherever one of the members of that pack sinks their teeth into a topic.

I have sat down with Rob a few times and reasoned. We don't always see "eye to eye" on everything but I Respect and consider anything he has to offer on any subject that is Jamaica related. His opinion is an "informed" opinion developed and honed by actually living in Jamaica and experiencing the culture outside of the Negril echo chamber.

We are under no illusions on what Negril.com is meant to be and although links to Jamaican matters get posted when someone stumbles upon them, not all of them are exactly what they seem to be about when you don't know the backround from a Jamaican's point of view and personal experience.

Several years back I was up on the West End late at night with several Business Owners from Negril, both from the beach and cliffs. I was the ONLY tourist in the group. The discussion was wide ranging and covered all sorts of topics. On one topic I voiced my opinion and one of the Owners leaned over and said "Happy, thanks, but you are only an F*&^ing Tourist". No offense was intended or received, he was just stating a fact.

As a Tourist I am entitled to my opinion, but since I don't Live or Work in Jamaica FULL TIME, it is just an opinion. We briefly visit the resort town of Negril and get a small taste of the runnings in the resort town of Negril, but only a taste.

I've been on this board since the late 1990's and have seen many boardies come and go, some boardies get a thrill stirring things up on this board. I always question their motive. Generally it is to gain notoriety on another less followed board.

Rob, keep up the good work and don't let the Trolls get ya down.

Funny, for someone who doesn't enjoy Negril or trip reports about Negril, you seem to spend a great deal of time patrolling the Negril forum...maybe one of these would be more more suited to your tastes?

Unless your sole purpose here is to "prove yourself"......I fail to understand your purposefully negative and condescending comments about those of us who do go to Negril and party on our vacations, because indeed we are mostly tourists. You seem to be the only one who has an issue with being a tourist.

Well Booger, I was in the same place of frustration you find yourself now, and I've been on the board many years. Rob made a couple attempts to explain things to me, but I was all righteous about my view point (and many agreed with it). About 2 years into my move to Jamaica, he made one more try, and that time I ‘got it’. His final effort was one of the highest expressions of love that I have ever experienced.

Rob cares way more than most folks on this board ever will. He already knows your perspective. Until you truly want to know his and suspend your defenses, you will think you are being treated badly.

I still don’t have PM’s or editing; sometimes it is an inconvenience but it probably saves me from some trouble too.

    Lola,

Nicely stated! Rob really does care!

I don't always follow Rob's advice, but then I usually end up in the deep end of the cesspool!

    Thanks TizzyATX,

Actually, I don't know much about you and your exploits in Negril as those are the type of reports I avoid as I mentioned earlier. I don't need to prove anything to anyone here. Yes, I do spend probably more time than I should combing through this Message Board looking for a few good reports with good pictures but since I was traveling to Jamaica before you were born and cameras were not so good, seeing pictures brings back a lot of good memories. You probably look at my writing as condescending but I prefer to just write how I feel and I don't feel at all unfavorable about your style of travel to Negril. I am happy to see you spending your money in Jamaica and helping a struggling economy. It makes things better for me when I return home as more of your and other's money finally does trickle down to Jamaicans in my hometown.

Funny you mention having an issue with being a tourist. The people in my hometown of Accompong Town often flatter me by calling me "A Jamaican" and a "Maroon". It makes me feel good about what I do and what I have experienced along the way. I spend most of my time in Jamaica helping the people and especially the children of my adopted hometown but I never lose sight of the fact that I will always be a "tourist". A "good tourist" by most people's estimation but nevertheless a "tourist". The amount of time you spend in Jamaica or the number of trips will never actually change that.

I have met a few fellow travelers that frequent these boards over the years and have some lasting friendships with a few but I am a loner by inclination and would not be a good drinking buddy (as I don't drink except a beer or two a year) or a party animal (as I have given most of that up many, many years ago).

You will probably find it frustrating to try to get me to angrily respond to your attempts at pseudo-"educating me" on how I should act and where I should do it just as much as I would find it frustrating to try to "educate" you on the Jamaica that lies beyond the party trail in Negril. All I can say is, "Party On!" Whoo! Whoo!

BTW, those Forum Links are to places that I regularly visit and many where I have lived over the years.
