Thread: Why do Jamaicans think Americans always need something?

I personally could not stand the constant barrage of higglers either. So I hopped in a route taxi and went back to the West End. The West End still has some higglers, but they would leave you alone after a polite "no thanks". I did however meet some interesting folks down on the beach, it was just the several folks that wouldn't take no for an answer. I also had an issue with a guy selling juice who tried to short me on my change. The guard at the resort called him out on it and he gave me back the correct change.
My next trip I'm going to give the beach another shot as I thoroughly enjoy bar hopping.

I was thinking of ways to avoid the sales pitch on the beach sans staying at a AI. I'll start it off with one of my favorites; you chill hassle free as long as you want at Herbies right place for the right people, no body going to bother you there. Anyone else have a "comfy "safe" zone on the beach?

your question is a simple one....supply and demand, as long as there are buyers there will be sellers! it's not rocket Science.
I would way rather have someone ask me if I needed anything in person, than all the spam i get on the internet and stupid commercials on tv...we get hustled all day long in our own homes!

I love visiting the amazing beaches of Negril, but it would be great to be able to walk down the beach without 100 hustlers trying to scam me. It would also be nice to be able to take a nap in a beach chair without someone waking me up every 5 minutes. Just because I am walking down the beach or down the road does not mean that I need anything at all. I just like to walk. No, means NO. Leave me alone scammer.

No, I don't want to ride a jetski. No, I don't want to go parasailing. No, I don't want any ganja. No, if I don't want any ganja, what makes you think I want cocaine. I don't want to meet nice Jamaican girls. (yeah right) No, I don't want your handmade bracelet. No, I don't want any fruit. No, I don't want your cooked lobster that has been unrefrigerated in the hot sun walking up and down the beach for 2 hours. etc, etc, etc...

Respect? I will respect you when you back off and give me some peace & quiet. When I need or want something, I will go buy it. I spend plenty of money every visit, but won't give these fools on the beach a dime because they annoy me.

Oh and my favorite... "It's better to beg than steal so give me a 5 dollars..." Those guys probably make more money per day doing that than I make in a day working my butt off.

Beaches in Jamaica are like the internet: full of annoying spam!

USC, good luck with what you have started.

I love Jamaica, I love Negril and I love reading and being part of this message board but you are never allowed to post a negitave without being looked down upon. I wish we could express views good or bad but that is just not how it works.

I get it for this post also but know there are others that feel your pain.

just be thankful i made a post earlier that was deleted, i not sure why but it happens; it had a great video of Felonious Munk speaking on the economic state of America and why we shouldn't pay our bills.

    LivingTheDream,

You are wondering why your politically slanted post about the American economy was removed?

Here is #1 item listed on the guidelines for posting on the Negril Message Board:

"1) Since this is the Negril Message Board, we would like the topics to try and reflect Negril and Jamaica tourism. This is meant to be a rather common sense guideline.

Although we appreciate all the visitors to the Board, if we allow people to post discussions about Cancun, where to dine in San Francisco, pictures of sunsets in New Jersey or their car for sale in Denver, the Negril Message Board would quickly lose its focus. "

I hope this clarifies as to why your non-Jamaica and non-Negril and non-tourism post was removed.

when was the original poster in Negril? It may have seemed to be more prevalant and persistant due to what seems to be an exceptionally slow season right now(from what i have read in recent posts and from our family friends on the island)? When people are straving they try a little harder perhaps than when times are better and there are more potential customers available???

I don't know why your video got deleted....maybe because it had nothing to do with Negril?

And, I don't think anybody looks down on the OP. Many people are bothered by beach higglers/vendors and it IS an issue that prevents some from returning to the beach unless it is an AI. I think the responses, were, for the most part, insightful, accurate and moderate. Nobody called OP names. But, it does seem clear that OP is an AI-type guy and others vouchsafing his decision should help with any cognitive dissonance he experience booking at an AI. That's not a slight, just an accurate observation.

I'd have to disagree I've been following this thread the entire time and maybe he wasn't so much as "looked down upon" but there was no real acceptance of his opinion during his OWN experience.. as a new member it really comes across that if the opinion of a poster is not positive and I take it is because all of you are very much in love with Negril (and why shouldnt you be) that you are defensive .. almost like a mother and her child. It's always hard to depict tone from text but sometimes it reads through whether it was intentional or not ... this is the tone that is reading through. Makes me a bit nervous to write my first Trip Report in the anticipation that I might not like something while I'm there. I will most likely skip that part in my report. Even now I'm pretty sure I'm going to get blasted because of this but I just thought that coming from someone that doesnt have an opinion about the "higglers" therefore not biased about Negril (yet) lol I could shed some light on the overall tone of the thread.

I have considered taking a white tee shirt, writing on it, and wearing it on 7-mile walks.

It would say "No thanks mon, mi all set. Respect!!"

Not sure how that would go over...haha.
