    Trip Insurance Help

A while back a couple people had talked about trip insurance they got for foreign travel. I'd like to know what companies are out there, we have medical insurance but know sometimes they won't cover foreign travel.

    Thanks for any help

I think Travel Guard is a pretty good one but this year, I bought the insurance through US Air when booking my flight. Medical is covered with their policy. I know there is a thread on this subject, so you might use the search option and bring up all the good info from the boardies. Some have personal stories to validate the policies. Good luck and it is always better to be safe than sorry. Have a great trip!

Policies vary and all have terms and conditions that may limit or invalidate coverage entirely. My best advice is to use a professional insurance broker to source your insurance to a company that best suits your needs with an policy that will respond when needed.

Here is a great site that allows you to compare coverages amongst 22 different providers.

We purchase ours through insuremytrip.com which let's you compare policies, prices and read reviews. One thing we make sure of is that we only purchase from companies with A or better ratings for solvency. One year, I accidentally purchased a policy that had only minimal medical evacuation coverage and it was no problem to cancel and purchase a different plan as they give you a 10 day review period. The policy we have for this winter's trip is Travel Guard.

    Quick insurance story (FWIW):

We always purchase trip insurance through our resort when booking (Couples Negril). I believe it is travel guard or trip guard - something like that. Well two years ago my husband was stung by a stingray which required a nurses visit as well as calling in the doctor. We incurred over $500 in medical expenses. When we got home I started to file the insurance claim with our travel insurance. The fine print said I had to send it through our personal insurance first! Anyway - our personal insurance covered all expenses minus a $20 deductible. That pretty much made the extra insurance I purchased a waste of money. That being said - last year and again this year I purchased the insurance through the resort. Hey - you just never know!

we have been buying trip insurance thru nationwide insurance. The policy stays in effect for a full year from purchase date.
works great if you travel more than once a year.
