The gist of the US President's message in re ebola was that there is no reason to fear it in this country. And that is the reality. A case or two may make it here, as tends to happen when this or similar diseases flare up (we have seen this with ebola before), but there's no reason to fear an epidemic. None at all. Several hundred thousand people will get the flu in the next six months and somewhere around 10,000 of them will die from it. No one talks about this or accuses the government of covering it up. It's reality and we accept it. But when something a little more 'foreign' comes along, we love to get overly agitated.
Chick V can only be controlled through mosquito eradication. There isn't much else that can be done. There isn't really any way to prepare for it other than dealing with mosquitoes. And significantly impacting the mosquito population in Jamaica is a tough task. I don't think anyone is covering anything up. Sure, tourist economies aren't going to try to scare people and they will certainly minimize the dangers, but the danger really is relatively minimal. And you can protect yourself by wearing mosquito repellent better than any government can protect you anyway.
