Deet is just so bad for you, get some on a camera or cell phone lens and you'll see. I fish the Everglades and Mosquito Lagoon in Florida and have had very good success with the following.

Lemon EUCALYPTUS
If you buy lemon eucalyptus as a liquid incense it is far cheaper than buying the oil, you can dilute the incense in baby oil or mix it with body lotion & apply. That way it is cheaper and probably better for your skin as with the oil it wasn't really designed for the skin but for oil burners.

Vicks VapoRup
I know it stinks but works great in keeping sand gnats, mosquitoes and ticks off your ankles and feet, you just need a little dab on your ankles (a little dab on a bite also relieves the itch)

Viamin C, take 2-3 times the recommended daily amount starting a couple days before traveling, mosquitoes HATE citrus an in an environment like Jamaica your perspiration will drive them away

Lavender and Eucalyptus Oils, just mix a little with water in a small spray bottle and take everywhere with you.

I have not had success with Skin So Soft, if you use most of the Natural Replants sold today, make sure you re-apply every 1/2 hour or so if you are perspiring, Hope this helps

Oh I know it's nasty, nasty stuff. I do a lot of outdoors stuff, hiking, backpacking, fishing etc. If you get the stuff on nylon it'll dissolve it, so I have to be careful around my tents (expensive silnylon) and lots of plasticy things. I think in light of the situation currently affecting the island, it's worth the trade-off, but that's just me.
