SIM card for Sprint Galaxy S4?

I've always stopped at Digitel and purchased a SIM card for my phones. The kid at Best Buy is telling me that I have to have my Sprint phone unlocked in order to do so. I believe that he's full of beans. The phone has both LTE & CDMA networks in the settings. Can I do my usual SIM card purchase for around $20 at Digitel on Friday, or does some one have a "better idea"?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

OK... I just read that it's cheaper to buy a "throw away" phone at Hi-Lo of even Digicel. Any insight?

Have you ever put a Digicel SIM card in a Sprint phone before? I thought it had to be quad-band phone on the GSM network, such as AT&T or T-Mobile, to work. Even if it is AT&T or T-Mobile, the phone still needs to be unlocked. I use an old unlocked AT&T phone with a Digicel SIM and it works great.

If the phone is "world ready" you should be able to swap sim's without unlocking the phone, but if you bought through Best Buy and they're telling you that you can't do it without unlocking, then I'd check directly with your carrier. A sim should only cost 5-6 bucks, not 20, but you still have to buy minutes. Probably cheaper to buy a cheap Lime phone at Value Master (under $30 out the door, including minutes).

Both Sprint and Verizon use CDMA (Code division multiple access) technology

AT&T, T-Mobile, etc use GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) as does Digicel and Lime

    The two ARE NOT compatible

Verizon has several quad-band phones that have both GSM and CDMA bands. I have one, which I have used with a Digicel SIM.

Just had my Sprint Samsung S4 phone unlocked yesterday at Yellow Computing/Phone Repair in town near Juici Beef. This was the only way to be able to use the Digicel SIM card with it, and it works great! It was about $US40 to have them do the service.
