    cell phones

what is the best way to stay in contact with the states while visiting in JA? we have a family member with health concerns so this trip i would like to have good but not expensive way to have family call us or we can check in on things. In previous trips we have never had such concerns but life changes.
Can we use our own cellphone? buy one there?
    what do you recommend?
    thanks in advance,
    nori

We're going to have our driver stop on the way to pick one up. Some transport services offer a phone for use as part of their service.

My wife always takes her phone and tells Verizon we are going so they put her on international use,it's like $1.99 a minute to call or $.99 to text and she seldom uses it but did once this trip.Pretty handy if needed!

If your phone uses a sim and is unlocked, you can just buy a sim and use your same phone.

If you are going to spend 30 bucks on a phone. You are best off spending 20 to have your phone unlocked online and just using a digicel sim.

Had the same concerns, hard to know without knowing the type of phone and plan you currently have. I plan on using the viber app for my iPhone, just need to be in a wi-fi spot to use. Similar to face time or the other popular one (name leaves me). It works on all phones....windows, android, blackberry. You can send free messages and make free calls (only to other viber users).

A Lime Sim is cheaper than digicel. Just $300j taxes in. About 1/2 the price of digicel. And only 3cents a minute to cells or landlines in US and Canada. Texts are about 6 cents.
