To get a more detailed, complete view on this issue, a lengthy Environmental Impact Study was developed last year.

    http://www.nepa.gov.jm/eias/Westmore..._FINAL-Nov.pdf

Interesting pages include page 412 (defining the aspects of the beach nourishment) and page 333 which shows the size and locations of the two proposed breakwaters.

Another interesting study done last year is the Natural Resource Valuation Considerations for the Negril Breakwater Project.

    http://www.nepa.gov.jm/eias/Westmore...RV%20Final.pdf

The Conclusion section (page 34) is a very interesting read.

    Todd,

The author of the Breakwater letter to the editor is Jane Issa of the Issa Family. Couples Resort founder (and other AI hotels in Negril and elsewhere) Abe Issa started the All Inclusive Hotel idea in JA. Although Ms Issa's points are compelling I do not notice any mention of the impact to the environmental area that development and land / water usages create. Having beautiful resorts and beach front property aside there seems to be an erosion problem. If it ain't broke don't fix it, but if it's broke and you don't fix it, it stays broke. Wish I knew the answer as Negril Beach is a great place!!!!

Historical correction....the first AI in the world was the Frenchman's Cove Resort in Port Antonio which was built and owned by Garfield and Grainger Weston.

Leaving out whether or not the break water will work,I understand construction traffic but how does it cripple the west end for years to come??

    Re: Breakwater letter to editor

The breakwater structures will require large boulders that need to be taken out to the construction site. Needless to say, they will need to be transported to the launching area which is near the mouth of the South Negril River (the river under the bridge by the roundabout). There are serious and warranted concerns that the trucks transporting these boulders will create roadblocks heading to the West End by stopping traffic.

There are historical reasons that back up this fear. When the water and sewage lines were being placed under the West End Road back in the 90's, there were months if not more than a year when passage through the West End was nearly if not impossible. For a time, buses heading to the far West End were completely stopped by what was then Pickled Parrot. Passengers, some with their luggage, had to disembark their bus, walk around the road size hole in the road and be placed on another bus on the far side of the hole to finish their journey.

From what I can gather, a proposed "solution" is to take a detour through Red Ground. But how some of those large tour buses will negotiate the tight turns makes me wonder how practical this can be. Another discussed solution would be to only move the boulders late night/early morning, but that will obviously create noise issues.

When the lines were placed back in the 90's several well known businesses had to shut their door for lack of customers. If someone cannot reach your establishment, it is hard to conduct business. This is a real worry and will have to be dealt with so the West End does not face that situation again.

All right, that makes sense, the tour buses won't be able to get to ricks, but the red plates will, and they'll
Still get to seastar and catcha and xtabi,(grin)... It'll be safe to walk down hill, for awhile, trying to come up with something here...
