    Negril Map Update?

Anyone updating that wonderful PDF map of negril? Looks like latest version might be dated 2011.

I don't think anyone has since then. Its certainly changed a significant amount since the last update.

The map remains the best resource we have available. Kudos to the folks who undertook that effort. Four years later, it's still mostly accurate, but change happens as sure as the sun shines in Negril.

I've been contemplating a new map with actual images of the resorts, bars, shops, etc. I know there are ways to link GPS tagged images to a map. I just don't know how to do it! What do folks think about a community effort at such a tool? Maybe this is too ambitious given the strength of the sand gravity, but a collaborative effort might serve as a manageable anti-gravity force field. I envision a Google Earth type downloadable map with Boardie sourced images of each property. A map wizard selects a submitted image for each property's main sign. In some cases, that would include waterside and road side. No more, "Where is that located? inquiries on the forum! Any GIS geeks out there? Respectfully --Marblehead.

Using Google Maps you can collaborate on a map and add in details not on the original Google Map. We did this on another message board I'm on for a fishing Lake in NY by naming bays, islands etc. Many of these locations are now identified on the main Google map. It seems Google will pull data from these "personal" maps for use in the main map. That may be the best way to go.

I registered a domain that redirects to our "personal" map if you want to take a look:

We set up an embedded link to our own personal Google Map nearly a year ago. It is located at the bottom of the Hotels listing. It was so out of date and in many cases wrong (Charela Inn was half way to Sav) that we didnt announce it. But it is there and would need massive updating.

One of the reasons we did not pursue it further is that we saw the Google street level trucks in Negril doing their 360 degrees video and figured they would be updating their map of Negril to make it more accurate. But we have not seen any progress so far with regard to the Street View feature.

We could make this a fun joint effort to list all the properties shown on the map, but Google could revise it at anytime with their Street View.

Huh! We've just been trying to find a relatively up-to-date beach/town/cliffs map! Totally awesome idea! Definitely down to work on that project! What fun that will be! Tell me what to do. Have camera will photograph!

In the meantime, Wikimapia has a not so bad interactive one. It's kind of up-to-date.

I'd certainly be willing to help in some small way if everyone wanted to pitch in on updating Rob's Google map.

How do we get started, Rob, our guru. You can make it idiot proof, right? Not that I would plan do, but accidents happen with the click of a mouse, and I'd hate to be the one that made it disappear!

So. What do we do? At great personal sacrifice, I could stop at every bar along the beach and take photos when we're there ....

I was hoping that with a GPS tagged image, the location problem would go away. Load the image and the map positions it correctly. Maybe Google will solve this with street view, as Rob suggests. --Marblehead
