I love the "back door" into Negril! Yes, it does take a little longer but I love the road less traveled. Linston took us on our most recent visit and it was wondrous. Stopping at Border Jerk is always a low key highlight! Our arrival Dec 14th was truly the longest time ever spent in the airport. In over 29 trips, it was the longest wait in history! 2 and a half hours before we saw the light of day outside of the airport. You can only imagine the traffic at that point. So, the road less traveled was probably as quick as the traffic jammed normal route and much more relaxing. Yes, we have flown into Negril before and I don't regret that at all. But, by the time we boarded, landed, then get transport to the west end....we could have driven and saved some bucks too.
Bottom line, I would give it a shot! It will transport you into the laid back lifestyle of Negril within moments. Kick back and enjoy the scenery and curves of Jamaica!
