has anyone brought a flask a favorite alcohol in their checked bags. I used to bring a nip of my favorite single malt back before 9/11. I don't care to bring the whole bottle.
Would this be allowed today? thanks for your advice.

No problem with checked booze. I think you have a ja customs allowance of 1 liter/person.
Hi Frank,
That may be for "sealed, full bottles" but bringing in a "flask" or a "nip" containing what they might perceive as a dangerous, flammable unknown liquid could be a problem. Not much of a chance of a problem but why not just take an empty flask and a complete sealed bottle and avoid any possible problems?

In checked baggage the only concern would be that it would open on your belongings, it does not pose a security threat in any way shape or form (I have worked in aviation for 10+years and my mom runs a section of airport security here in Canada). Enjoy your "nip"![]()
I personally take a full sealed bottle of Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey because I hadn't been able to find that in ja.
Get some little airline liquor bottles or any other bottle less than 3.4oz and fill them up with your beverage of choice and you can carry them on, just have them in a clear 1qt baggie and in a basket when going through security. They are legal because they are under 3.4oz, and you can have more than 1 bottle as long as each is under 3.4oz, that way you can also enjoy a "nip" on the plane.
Here is the rule:
When it comes to bringing liquids or gels aboard an airplane, you are allowed to bring 3-ounce (actually 3.4 ounces or 100 ml) containers filled with the shampoos, liquid soaps, mouthwash or other liquid items of your choice within their carry-on luggage
I just checked the TSA blog website. here's the scoop:
Checked Baggage
Any amount of alcohol greater than 3.4 ounces must be packed in checked baggage.
Alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content (140 proof), including 95% grain alcohol and 150 proof rum, cannot be packed in checked luggage.
Travelers may take up to five liters of alcohol with alcohol content between 24% and 70% per person as checked luggage if it’s packaged in a sealable bottle or flask.
Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol content are not subject to hazardous materials regulations.
I was at the airport in Kingston at the duty free shop ready to pay for 2 jugs of Appleton when the lady asked if I had a direct flight or stopover. I was flying to JFK via Miami where I would clear customs and change planes. She warned me that even though I was buying duty free in sealed packages I would lose the bottles in Miami. She saved me $40 bucks and a huge blowout in Miami. I can only imagine the amount of booze they confiscate in those situations. Yes common sense should told me so but I totally forgot. Lucky the lady looked out for me and didn't just make the sale!!
Johng, n Miami, didn't you have to retrieve your checked luggage and clear customs? If so, you then put your bottles in your rechecked bags and you are good to go, you just wouldn't be allowed to carry them on at your transfer.
Packrat,
You are correct about that. If I remember correctly I was allowed one check in bag and I was maxed out for space and without leaving stuff behind had no room for the rum. But yes had I thought about it I could have done exactly as you suggest. Another reason that direct flights work better!!!
