How does one go about this? Is it checked? Or carried on? Thanks.

I have brought guitars for the past 10 years. Then I leave them with local musicians. If you have them in a gig bag you can take them on board and put them in the over head. Delta addresses this on their web site. I pack our wraps and towels around the body and neck to give more protection. I jam on the beach with the beach musicians
and then pass it on. Many of the guitars that walk the beach came in with me....for a hundred bucks you can have a nice guitar to play and really help these guys out at the end of your trip...Only time a didn't leave it was a couple of years ago I brought my Strat and played with the band at 3 Dives....It came home with me...The gig bag is the answer and not a hard shell case....
BE A TRAVELR
I too brought a gig bag and carried on plane.
I often take my Martin Backpacker. It has many air miles on it and is usually in the overhead compartment. Where things can go wrong is when you need a smaller commuter leg to your flight. They often don't have much overhead storage if at all. In all my travels it only has one tuner slightly bent (still functions perfect). Even if you have a full size guitar, use a soft gig bag or they might require that it goes in with the luggage.
As with all things concerning the air lines, we are at their mercy.

I checked both Southwest and United and they stated that it must conform to the carry on baggage size. If not you have to buy a ticket or check it. I would hate to show up with a gig bag and be forced to check it. No bueno....

I don't know if I copied the link correctly or not. If it doesn't work, just lookup "United Breaks Guitars" on YouTube. It's a funny song from 2009. Some pros that I know who fly with expensive Martin guitars and other instruments, use heavy fiberglass cases that are almost bullet proof. It probably costs a bunch to get them checked that way.
