A lot of places charge tax on their bill...some are written in to the price but you are paying the tax never the less. The regular tax is 16.5% but some businesses in Negril were given a tax incentive to start their business and allowed to charge a lower rate.
It sounds like you may have been charged a 10% tax and a 10% service fee (which many properties charge).

At both Sunrise and Italian Café they add 20% tax and 10% more on that. A veggy pizza ends up at $18.00 us. I think they are both pretty good though.

Ciao Jamaica's menu states "10% Service Charge and 10% Tax" added to your bill. And, they have great grilled lobster pizza

    hdcouple,

I can understand why you didnt see the 10% tax and 10% service notice on their pizza menu. Its is listed on it, but it is on the back page.

    Yooperbill,

No place is allowed to charge 20% tax, the maximum tax rate is 16.5%. Charging 20% would not only be illegal but cause major headaches for the accountant... (grin)

I could be wrong on what they call the extra charges. But a veggie pizza is on the menu for $14.00 and the final bill is $18.00. I live very close to sunrise so I will go back and read the bill carefully.

Interesting article in this mornings Gleaner about tax compliance in Jamaica. The article states there are 63,000 registered companies in Jamaica. Only 3,500 regularly pay taxes. Not sure what this means, but thought it was interesting.

The current tax system can be rather confusing for the average business. Besides GCT (sales tax) which is made rather easy to pay each month, there are other employee taxes that include NIS, NHT, PAYEE, Education and HEART taxes which are paid in different ways. A TCC (Tax Compliance Certificate) is currently necessary when a business makes major purchases or investments such as importing items or purchasing a vehicle. When a TCC is needed by a business that is behind in their taxes, they hire an accountant to get caught up with all their taxes and fines so they are not considered "regular tax payers". But they do end up paying their taxes.

An interesting point is made in the article about the difficulty in paying taxes: "Despite the Fiscal Systems Modernisation project, aimed at increasing tax compliance, reducing costs and improving efficiency in the public sector, business processes and re-designed organisational structures to strengthen tax compliance, and improve customer service, have been found wanting."
