cell phone question - HTC EVO

I did a search but came up empty on this...

I've been thinking about buying a cheapo phone next time I'm there for my trips but remembered that I have an old EVO that I wouldn't mind using while in Negril. How do I go about getting it up and running? I'm guessing I just need to pick up a sim card and some minutes right? Can I just stop by the Lime desk at the MegaMart in MoBay and get this done?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    thanks

Shouldn't be a problem as long as the phone is unlocked.

Yes, if unlocked and a phone that allows you to use a SIM card like TMobile, ATT&T etc

I've never unlocked it. It's way out of contract and not currently connected to a provider (sprint.) I know it does have a sim card that can be replaced. Guess I'll start googling how to unlock it.
    thanks

I THOUGHT Sprint was on a CDMA network and couldn't or difficult to work in Jamaica .....

    maybe call Sprint

There are ways to unlock phones with a code but you usually pay for that....

    Sprint doesn't use sim cards.
Buy a cheap cell phone in Jamaica.

It would have to be a quad band phone (world phone), and be unlocked.

Not sure about Sprint, but AT&T helped me unlock my off-contract phone at no charge. I just contacted their tech support and they gave me the codes and walked me through the process. I have heard that there are online services that will do this for you, for $20.

However, this may be a mute point as others are saying that Sprint phones are not compatible with the cell service in Jamaica.

Not all Sprint phones are incompatible, you just have to know what bands it can operate on. A quick google search should clear it up...
