Hey Bnewb,
I hope you and Rob are sitting around Ivan's this time next week. The wife and I would like to have a drink or two or three with you two. It's our first day in town and we have a million questions. LOL.

Negrilaholic,
With the "blasts from the past" links I posted as well as the Tuesday photos, I was trying to demonstrate just how "lonely" Summerset Road is currently. The "lonely" term was used by a Jamaican friend of mine to describe the road. And it does seem to fit.
As Bnewb said, and as everyone I know who lives in Negril says, no one would be able to recommend in good conscience that a single female tourist stay on this road at the present time. There are way too many great places that are available to stay in Negril and there is no reason you would have to stay on Summerset Road.
Maybe there is a reason you got the room so cheap for a month. When a deal sounds too good to be true, often there is an underlying reason that is not obviously apparent...
That said, in all likelihood you will be fine and I am sorry if you feel this reality check is harsh. We all want you to have the best time possible. But maybe you should be questioning those who recommended this resort to you in the first place.
Please remember to be smart and aware of your surroundings. There are many great taxi drivers that will be able to take you from the resort to any place you want to go and back. Be sure to keep your phone charged and have plenty of credit to be able to call a driver should you need one.
Take care.
Negril.com - For the vacation that never ends!
Hey Negrilaholic you will probably be fine just be wary.
I said previously that I did not care to holiday with my children there.I did get offered a very good deal for summerset lane and turned it down and you know that is not really me to turn down a good deal but I just felt it is a little bit deserted also remember no street lights and I like to come and go not feel closed in once darkness falls.
I know you can get a taxi but I just did not like the idea with children in tow.I hope you have a great time if already booked and paid for and I am sure the hotel will be what you expected just try and get a regular driver that is what I would do.I think some peoples opinions on here may be based on 2 incidents that I recall being seen elsewhere on the internet regarding the area.I do not recall the dates sorry but it was over the last year or so if I remember correct
When I said the place looked a little bit deserted and desolate to someone who lives in Negril and they said correct tictoc it IS like that I trusted their opinion and it sealed the no-deal
Having friends who have homes in any neighborhood doesn't make me biased...just makes me experienced with the neighborhood on the basic visiting level.
I don't see what my friends or family that LIVE there have to gain by someone staying on the road as a tourist - they don't have businesses there. And as far as "property value", that's not even a concern for anyone I know living there. So I don't get how I'm "biased" - I'm just stating my opinion based on MY experience.
Yes - I have been traveling to Negril "as a tourist" since 1983. I've been living in Negril part time since 2002. Not that that has anything to do with the price of tea in China. And truthfully, I haven't "polled" my friends who have been living full time in Negril anywhere from ten years to thirty years as to their thoughts about safety on that lane. I'm just stating my own experience. No right or wrong - no challenges to those living there at all. And I see I'm not the only one stating an opinion here, lol. There are quite a few other Negril "vets" chiming in in both directions.
Look - the neighborhood I live in was once considered "wild west" and not all that safe. When I first moved there it was just that - a residential neighborhood. A lot of tourists would not feel comfortable walking around that area either. But that is why I love(d) it - I'm the type of person that prefers to be in a neighborhood, amongst a community and not in the "middle" of things. I know that is not everyone's preference as a matter of fact - it is NOT most tourist's preference anywhere - location, location, ,location.
I have to laugh though because my husband's best friend bought his property there in 1972 (my GS's father)...so one of the first places I checked out when I was first coming to Negril WAS Summerset Lane.

Well, I guess that settles it then. China can rest assured tonight that you are not trying to corner the market on tea.Yes - I have been traveling to Negril "as a tourist" since 1983. I've been living in Negril part time since 2002. Not that that has anything to do with the price of tea in China.
