That looks like the Jamaica Banana Spider! We had one that was sort of a "pet" in our yard when we lived on the West End. The really are fascinating to look at and study. Here is some info about it:

We have similar spiders in N. Florida. They build large webs that are very strong. You can almost bounce off them when you accidentally walk into one. AFAIK, they're actually harmless.

I saw one my first night in Negril. I have a huge spider phobia and freaked the F out!!! Saw a couple more while I was there and while they still freak me out, Jamaica is so wonderful that I didn't mind too much (maybe it's the Ganja)
There are lots of those in the cave at the end of Rutland Point.
