    Taxi help

We've decided to venture out today. We are not used to taking taxis & We watched a guy yesterday outside of ahh bees getting a taxi & noticed him pointing down at the ground with one finger then I think 2 fingers. What's the meaning/ difference? (I do know red plate non route taxis only) thanks

That's just the Jamaican way of waving down a route taxi. If you take a ride through the country you will see many locals doing this as you pass, because they may think your driver is an available route taxi.

No need to worry about this - taxi drivers can easily identify tourists and will beep at you if you are standing on the side of the road to offer you a ride.

We got a taxi, non red plate, to take us to the cliffs for dinner from Coco La Palm. When he picked us up for the return trip, the police pulled up next to us and really gave the driver a verbal beat down. They told us that if he charged us when we got back to the hotel, not to pay him and to let them know about it. We needless to say, we did pay him but it was an eye opener. The driver complained after the police left but I see their point of enforcing the taxi laws.

    Dax,

Just to clarify, you did not get into a taxi, you got into some person's car, like hitch-hiking but you paid for it. A taxi is a vehicle with red plates. A white plate means the vehicle is not a taxi. The police did you a big favor checking on you and the driver, who deserved the "verbal beat down" if not a traffic ticket.

This is true. It was not a taxi. I am glad the police were doing their job!
