    Coco bread

I have been eating it for years as well as bringing it home for my grand kids - who love it. I have a question about it though. Can anyone tell me why it is called coco bread? It doesn't contain coconut or cocoa. I declare it when I come home but always have to explain what it is (no problem there).

    SLP,

per wikipedia it contains some coconut milk:

but recipes can call for either coconut milk or regular milk

I too inquired (for a couple of years) about the name - was always met with a shrug but a smile that let me know there was something behind the name. Finally got the explanation - those curious can toss out this response and see if it's verified = the bread is so named because of the resemblance to a certain part of the female anatomy. It was when I heard this that I also realized the meaning behind the (rude/crude) comments from older Jamaican men along the lines of "Mi wan dig out yuh coco" - at the time, all I could think of was "I don't have a farm, what are you talking about?" Sometimes it just takes a while to pull the whole picture together.

VVHT - thanks for the reference. I had no idea it contained coconut milk.

Olivia - I thought I'd heard something like that but wasn't sure.

I think this a case of which came first, the chicken or the egg. And if we start discussing tacos, this thread will be closed! (grin)

That being said (and joked about), the name "Coco Bread" did not originate as a reference to female anatomy but more likely because it is thought that the name comes from coconuts, due not to taste, but to the bread's hard exterior and softer interior and can be split (like a coconut), and coconut milk is used in the recipe. But one has to remember that it does take a hammer or machete to split a coconut unlike that tasty coco bread... hmmmm....

In much more recent times, the younger generations have turned it into a "slang term" for the above mentioned anatomy. But when one considers the the history or Jamaica, how long ago it was first baked and the religious aspects of the island, the name would never have originated that way. But as they say in one of the great USA southern Republics, "why let facts get in the way of a good story!" (grin)

Thanks Rob. I had heard about the modern slang but wondered about it.
