    Hiking

    Anyone have suggestions for best places for hikers to explore in and around Negril? For a really good hike, I'm sure my friends would be willing to make it a day or half-day trip.

    Also if anyone has info on birding in Negril, I need suggestions. We are bringing a large group in February, and starting to get questions about thing to do. There will likely be more ;;

    In fact, if there are day trips you think are not to be missed, feel free to add those as well. I'm familiar with most things, but have done none of them.

    Thanks in advance for your help, as always this is the best place to shop for info!

    Mrs W,

    Come out to Zion Hill. You can hike all over the hills and finish at the gutter wall spring head

    I read somewhere there is hiking at Percy’s Riverside Retreat. As far as day trips....some of the things we have done over the years is snorkeling on the reef and a picnic at Booby Cay (we do this every year), Mayfield Falls River Walk, YS Falls, Black River Safari, and Dolphin Cove. Spend an afternoon at Rhodes Hall Plantation and hike out to the croc ponds and/or perhaps go for a horse ride. Another nice afternoon, day, or evening can be spent at Half Moon Beach and take the boat out to Calico Jacks.

    Believe it or not, but some people go to the Negril wastewater treatment plant for birding. It is just out of town next to the golf course.

    Your friends could check out Rockland Bird Sanctuary near Mo Bay.

    Thanks for replies! A few questions … Captain where is Zion Hill? I see something on the map, but it is on the far east side of the island. Jaherring, I think some of them would love Dolphin Cove - of course I worry about the ones who will see it as politically incorrect to cage dolphins, sigh … I will put it on the list and let them decide for themselves ;;

    I had not heard of Percy's Riverside Retreat and will add that to my list. Sounds similar to a day at Abeokuta. Also Rockland Bird Sanctuary, which I just heard of (thanks Sam).

    Our driver is looking into this- but anyone heard of a place in the deep west end (not quite as far out as Jackie's) for birding? Someplace apparently not too well developed, but trying to start up?

    Thanks again - as this trip gets closer I'm sure there will be more questions to come!

    Zion Hill is my place. We're 25 minutes from the roundabout. Before you reach Little London

    oh and btw, rjonsun, I like little knowledge like going to water treatment plant - a place like that might just be the best spot! (I wonder if it smells badly there?)

    For the birders, there is also the hummingbird garden to consider. I do not have personal knowledge about it... Anyone been there? I put it on as a 'might do' for my trip.
