p.s... a few minutes ago,
on the program-teaser,
they mentioned that the seaweed
draws/attracts/encourages sand-fleas

Hmmmm, maybe the decaying smell of the seaweed is Nature's way of keeping us humans away from these attracted sand-fleas... (grin)
