there is a cheap bunk room at firefly if you want to be on the beach...with use of their outdoor showers. I also stayed at negril escape....pretty empty when I stayed there, water pressure was almost non-existant and they were having power issues, all that may be fixed by now.....i liked the owner and I think they own the jungle and you can catch the van down there.

Yup. Similar experience when we stayed there, maybe a year and a half ago. Only 2 other rooms occupied on the large property - one of them by a women who rented a studio room for an extended stay. They would cut the power to the A/Cs during their karaoke night, so that they can run the sound system. (This frustrated my wife because karaoke night was the night we arrived and she just wanted to go to our room and crash for while). That said, karaoke night was pretty fun with a good mix of locals and tourists, the bar was hopping and they had decent jerk barrel on site. NE is, in fact, owned by the family that owns the Jungle. They also own Boardwalk Village and provide free shuttle service to both venues.

Negril Escape seems to be pretty active on Facebook, as of late. I hope this means that there is new management and a renewed interest in the property. In the recent past, it seemed the owners concentrated their efforts on Boardwalk Village and The Jungle.

Pure Gardens right next to Time Square was ok and very reasonable. Stayed when it was a different name so not sure how it might be now.

You're a brave girl, Tizzy. I would recommend not camping in Negril. Whistling bird is a beautiful property but very expensive. Sorry to hear it has closed. Have you checked out the Firefly cabins or the cabins at Kuyaba? I think they still call the cabin section at Firefly "Secrets" cabins. Negril Yoga Center also has inexpensive rooms.

    Hi Tizzy,

Back in the 70's and 80's camping in a tent was very common in Negril because many properties on the beach were narrow stripes of land from the road to the beach, most had no plumbing and flush toilet. But that is then and this is now. You should check Barry Jackson, his Grandmother for years ran Gloria's Sunset Cottages. The property is located about 3/4 of a mile to town with a wide expanse of beach (I believe it is still next door to Bar-B-Barn). Barry might call it Barry's Place. You would be in good safe hands there. Barry is very cool, honest and there may still be land on his property where you can pitch a tent and most likely use the shower and bathroom. I know he also rents rooms that are quite inexpensive. Barry grew up from a little kid to a parent so he knows the tourist industry business inside and out. It would be worth your while to check him out.

You would have a great location there close to town, beach 50 feet away, and in good hands.

    Good Luck,
    John

I used to camp at Roots Bamboo alot about 20 to 25 years ago. Took our two little children with us at the time. The experience was awesome with the sea right at our door. Having said that, and even though a couple of tent spots are still available, the high pressure sales higglers and the Roots party nights, create a bit of atmosphere that is not condusive to the laid back attitude available with locking your room door.
If you are worried about something, do something about it. If there is nothing you can do, why worry!

Camping in a tent depends on a lot of considerations especially the security at the property you are staying at. Many people who have had room doors that lock have been victimized so by virtue of being in a tent does not mean it would be dangerous. I camped in a tent probably 20 times in Negril and never was bothered by anyone or anything. It is a very basic and inexpensive way to go for those who enjoy it. Back in the days I think I paid around $5 a day that included my tent space, communal outdoor cold shower and breakfast.

lol.....camping.....and for a lady....lol.....just negotiate a good room rate.....longer you stay, the better the rate
always a lot more rooms than tourist in Negril....beach is the high rent district......so prices higher der....
best bet for a really good room rate is on the Cliffs/West End....mi don't recommend Whitehall or Redground
