Taxi / Private Driver / Tour Company

    Hi all,

I have been getting alot of mixed information regarding who tourists should use as drivers. Who are the operators who have insurance for tourist if there is an accident. Can someone please explain how a tourist should know.... red plate?? window tags/stickers???

Thanks in advance for your help.

A PPV (public passenger vehicle) will have a red plate. That indicate proper insurance, vehicle inspection and driver certification.

No white plate car can have those requirements met.

Of course I recommend my son Linston

god forbid should there be an accident, who covers the third party claims? like injury to the passengers? separate from car damage and such . . .

i rent cars and i get third party coverage for such instances. . . . good question . . .

Red Plates are required to have insurance that covers paying passengers in the event of an accident. There are a few Red Plate vehicles around who are operating them illegally so, to be safe, use the Taxis who pay for advertising on this site. They have been vetted.

There is never a good reason to use a white plate vehicle. In addition to having no coverage should your driver be in an at fault accident, you can possibly be held liable to any damages done to the other vehicle and their passengers since you are engaged in an illegal activity by hiring an illegal taxi.

And just last month, at a regular roadside police check, during a check of the car, a gun was found. Both the driver and their tourist passenger, who were riding in a white plate car (illegal taxi) were taken to the Negril Jail lockup. Not a fun way to spend your vacation when there are many great drivers to choose from right on this site! In a white plate vehicle, any crime committed involving that vehicle makes you an accomplice.

    Thanks!

It gets very confusing when some say its just the tags in the front window that proves its a driver that is covered with passenger insurance, that it is only taxi's that need red plates, etc.

So, if its not a red-plate, they are not insuring passengers! got it!

For all red plate drivers....if there is a JTB sticker in their window this shows that they have higher limits of insurance and are JTB (Jamaica Tourist Board) certified. There are other stickers such as ones that have a single letter...this signifies where the vehicle is registered. Other than the JTB sticker there's no other sticker to really look for and all cars have a registration sticker.
