Crocodiles have been down graded from endangered to threatened. Jamaica has only one species of crocodile, the American Crocodile. This species is shy, timid, and seemingly lacks the propensity to attack humans. No documented attacks on humans by the American crocodile have been reported in the United States, despite assorted anecdotes. Fisherman in Jamaica have been bitten when pulling their fishing nets from river banks. There have also been cases where the American Crocodile encounters cars or boats or fish nets, and still instances where it is hunted by people out of fear.
Rhodes Hall is committed to preserving the natural habitat of the crocodile. We don't expect the crocodile to come out and shake your hand. We have a small crocodile nursery and a 60 ft. floating viewing platform, on what we call, "Crocodile Lake". We do not disturb it's environment, allow motor generated water crafts that scare crocodiles away and pollute the water, nor do we make this gentle creature perform like a circus animal.
Our reserve is government protected and one of the largest crocodile habitats on the northwest part of the island. We consider a glimpse of this magnificent and shy creature a treat. We offer guided walking tours through the swamp and into Crocodile Lake, where our knowledgeable guides, armed with chicken backs, gently lure them close to the viewing platform where you can easily view this unique creature. Education is a valuable tool for the preservation and respect of all living creatures. Rhodes Hall Eco Tours www.rhodesresort.com 1-876-957-6422![]()
