    Question Credit cards?

Was just wondering how many places in Negril take credit cards and how safe using them there is. I have heard of people with extra charges added on after getting home, but iirc it was from near the airport.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Credit cards?

Moose, I usually use my credit card at the Hotel for lodging and any meals, drinks or activities booked through the Hotel. As a rule I do not use the plastic out and about. I prefer to use Jamaican dollars when possible, but sometimes I don't have time to get to the ATM or Cambio to make change and then I'll use US dollars. If I use US dollars I expect to get my change in Jamaican dollars.

The exceptions to the rule are if I'm buying anything at the Duty Free Plaza or at the Duty Free in the Airport.

I use my Bank ATM card at the ATMs in Negril and usually try to withdraw Jamaican dollars.

As far as safety is concerned.... I've had more misuse of me credit cards here in the states than in Negril or anywhere else I've travelled.

    Enjoy,

In July I used my credit card at exactly one place in JA, and upon returning home found a $39 charge for psychic services that happened while we were away. Don't know if it was coincidence or not. Cancelled that card and had it replaced.

Have used my debit card at the ATM at Times Square, no problem... well, usually no problem, except for when it runs out of money.

    Moose,
I just returned a couple of weeks ago from Negril. Make sure that you notify your card carrier that you will be in Jamaica or they might cut you off. That happened to my friends that were with me. The bank can also tell you at that time if charges will be assets at that time. I used my debit call and after I got back I had charges for using it in Jamaica, they were small but it all adds up. One store in Time Square told me there was a charge for using a card no mater what it was credit or debit of 80 cents. For using it at my hotel for my stay there was a $14 charge on my debit card. I tried to always use cash, either US or J. I always try to take small bills with me, lots of ones for tipping. Never had any other problems over the years. The rate was 118J when I was there. Hope this helps.

I'm planning on only using my credit card at the hotel and duty free.
I did have to call my bank and inform them.

If you have a Bank of America debit card, it works with no extra fee in the Scotia Bank ATMs. (B of A told me they still add a 3% international surcharge, though. There's just no charge for using the ATM.) If I need Jamaican dollars, I'll go there.

I'm also bringing Jamaican and American dollars with me. (small bills)

I've used my credit card in Jamaica and have never had any issues.....so far. I've used it at HiLo, Push Cart, Cosmos and the liquor store at the airport. I call my credit card company in advance to let them know the dates I will be in Jamaica. My cc has no international fees.

Credit card for Hotel charges. Cash elsewhere. I had my CC skimmed at a pretty reputable place. Turns out one or more of the wait staff was not reputable
