If you go to Jamaica every year it is probably more cost effective to buy a phone and either load it every couple of months on line or purchase a new sim card every year with international minutes. They usually have a package deal. My digicel isn't a smart phone so I don't have any idea what one with a data plan costs.

I just returned last week and a Digicel Data Plan for 2gb was about $1800 Jamaican Dollars (about $15 US).

I used it every day for about half and hour and still had some leftover when I renewed each month. I only had 3G where I live and it was still faster (most of the time) as I was using it as a HotSpot for my computer than the cable modem I have at home here in So. Fla.

Great deal and most definitely worth the money in my opinion.

So, For someone who has never felt the need to have a phone while I am in Jamaica, what would be the best option? I would probably only need it for reservations. Although it would be nice to have a smart phone with gps or google maps as I plan on doing some side trips on a motorcycle.

Just use Linston as your airport transfer, he'll give you a loaner to use while on island.

We've been using our Verizon iPhones for several years now. Swap out the sim and good to go. Add a little credit every couple months to keep it active when we are back in the states.
