    Ackee!

When our local Pete's Fresh Market opened on Roosevelt Road in Oakbrook Terrace (western suburb of Chicago, IL) I was excited to see the selection of Walkerswood products including my favorite jerk sauce that I'd been bringing back from JA. I brought in a label from a can of ackee I brought back from the HiLo - they looked at it curiously and said they would look into stocking it. This weekend, I found it on the shelf! Some saltfish from Caputo's and I got me some Jamaican Breakfast to tide me over until Feb!

$10/can - I think I pay around $6US for a can at the HiLo so I will stock up again when there. In the meantime, nyam! This is rapini not calaloo, a biscuit not Festival and -4F (-20C), but you know, you make do...

That's about what I saw it for in Rockford IL. Not so much demand in Rockford.

Much prefer fresh off the tree but trapped here... Even off the tree if it is not ripe or was forced open, the ackee is pretty darn poisonous, and death is not at all slow...

That seems really expensive for ackee.

Not if you add in the airfare to JA to get it from there!

It grows here in So. Florida so we can just pick it off the tree.

I love ackee but don't really care for salt fish. In Accompong at my home we often use "Veggie Chunks" (vegetable protein) instead with lots and lots of mountain garlic.

    Nice looking plate!

Have you ever been to the Caribbean Festival in Rock Island in August? Yamaka My Weekend. Good jerk and more there.
