Don't blame the merchants for the poor value of the Canadian dollar. Either way if the prices are listed in USD or JMD, the relative cost has increased dramatically when starting with CAD. The devaluation in CAD has caused a lot of problem both in Canada and the US. It's great for exports from Canada, but terrible for imports. Right now, many US based manufacturers haven't even kept up with the rate of devaluation. Late summer it was 1.25 to 1, now above 1.4 to 1. It doesn't look like there is a any indication of slowing down. I've seen some articles saying 2 to 1 later this year. Who knows.

Keep in mind all of this happening after many years of a strong Canadian dollar. Just something to think about.

    1 CAD = 85 JMD
    1 CAD = 0.71 JMD = 85 JMD

Whoa there, Sandman. We have more than our share (the wood people), absolutely, but we're not all like that. Far from it.

I know TAH. But when you generalize about an entire country like that it displays both arrogance and ignorance. The vast majority of Americans I have met have been really nice. But there's always a jerk in the crowd.

As for those posting that our dollar has been strong up until recently, that if not accurate. We bave been under par with the greenback for a long time now, just been getting real bad the last couple years.

The Maritimes, also called the Maritime provinces or the Canadian Maritimes, is a region of Eastern Canada consisting of three provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island ( I also include NFLD ). just north of the state of maine.

I did get a good laugh out of that one, I like how you roll man!

i shop at walmart, if i knew what maritimes was, i'd prob go there too...i eat off the dollar menu for lunch when at home, i eat box lunch in jamaica....nothing wrong with stretching your money, even on vacation...it can turn a one trip a year budget into a two (or three) trip a year budget...lol...

but seriously, i spend everything in JA....we carry 100 ones for tipping and quick change for places who claim not to have any....everything else is spent with ja dollars....if pricing is in US, i"ll take a cheap item off the menu, do a quick conversion in my head, and i'll know the diff before i order...alot of those same big name resturants charging in us dollars are also adding the gratuity in with the bill......i wonder how much, if any, the workers get of this.....

one thing to remember, if u are frustrated with a bill or something.....it is not the servers/workers fault, they just work there, usually have nothing to do with the pricing....i saw a tourist get all over a server this last trip about something she couldn't control....
maybe you do not see it as an insult but we do, not only do we tip large to our resort staff, but we support a Ja family and our beautiful Ja god daughter as well we also give out the cheap dollar store toys as well, L.O.L.M soon come

Is it a widely used stereotype? I only ask because I had never heard anyone say that before. I'm pretty much a tightwad on most things, but generous to those that I feel deserve something extra, and friends/family in need. I don't see it as a bad thing.
